In your opinion, why? What does give you that is unique? (That is, that a person couldn't "get" without that belief)

a sense of purpose, a justification for the slaughtering of animals, a sense of companionship (not alone in the universe), a sense of being here for a reason (part of some bigger plan)

Since we can not see God, then we have come up with different ways to "see" him through images, such as statues, paintings, etc. So why go through all the trouble for someone we can not see? Most likely because we have an ingrained desire to know what lies beyond death. Since many of us believe that there is something more beyond our limited existence, we naturally believe that there must be some kind of divine power to make this happen. This belief helps us to understand better why there is life and also gives us hope for the afterlife.
I personally believe there is more to our existence than just to live and die and become nothing. I can not tell you what religion is correct, if any, but the idea of becoming non-existent is not too pleasing for most of us.
You ask why makes us have faith. Here's a hypothetical experiment. Suppose you have a giant bowl. You throw in wood, concrete, wiring, glass, etc. In other words, everything you would need to make a nice house. You then shake and spin this bowl. You hit it with lightning, heat, cold, radiation. You do this for millions of years. Do you ever think you'll have a fully built house from doing all this. I'd say the odds of this are impossible. Now think of a one celled organism becoming existent by "accident" in the same manner. In the end you'll need intelligent design to accomplish this feat.

I read somewhere that when the earth was in it's first stages, there were things we just didn't understand or couldn't deal with. Like no rain for crops or water, so they invented "Gods" to cope. Which makes sense as the bible hadn't been written yet. I don't believe He is an invention tho, just for the record, I see Him as a patient, loving, forgiving Father who waits & watches for us to choose Him. If He forced us to love & follow Him, we would not have free will. Faith in God has given me the best thing in life I could of asked for, Love.

The love Him & I have for each other is the best most intimate relationship I could ever have or ask for~ when I was young, I wished to be rich. He didn't make me rich, but I am wealthy. And being thankful for what He has blessed me with is the greatest gift of all.

All sorts of gods appear on a routine basis to deceive us and to distract us from the one true God. And many are invented by other people.

What does "faith in God" give me that is unique? The salvation of my eternal soul. And, it's something that you can't "get" without faith.

How can we be sure that is not what has happened? Something we can have faith in throughout life. A very optimistic concept, who wouldn't want that, if 'God' gives you that hope why not believe whatever your life someone is there with you rewarding your efferts.

If there is no God, then there is no spirit. If humans came into existence by way of animals, we would BE animals and have no knowledge of anything beyond pure instinct.

Hypothetical questions don't pique me. It is hard enough figuring out what IS. We humans are limited. It is hard for us to be honest. So how can we rightly judge what IS if we don't want it to be true? As Sir Julius Huxley said, we don't want to give up our fornication.
