The ceremony is for a 1 year old little girl called Ruby, the ceremony is to be non religious. We would like the reading to be either poetry or some poigniant prose. Thank you.

My suggestion is that this has nothing to do with weddings.

Ive just had a look on the Internet and a few came up. The best place to look is either the libray or go to a good book shop, I know the ceremony is not religious but try a bible book shop, they are defiantly a good place to start and not everything is always religious, plus they will be able to put you on the wright track.
Poetry books might help.

You could tell the meaning of her name and how it relates to her.
Shakespeare said "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet"
Maybe you could say ' The sparkle of a Ruby can not compare to the abundant light our Ruby has brought to all or lives'
I'm sure you get the idea. Good luck !

If you are a relgious person, then the Bible is the answer if you are a Christian. For the matter every relgious book has a chapter on birth.
