As per the other answers, golf rules state that a full set allows a maximum of 14 clubs. To break it down even further a full set will include a putter and a set of irons and a set of woods. Most standard iron sets will include from a 3 iron pitching wedge. Most wood sets will have a 1, 3 and 5 wood. Within the 14 clubs allowed in a set, players will take out a wood and substitute it for an extra wedge such as a sand or lob (58, 60 degree) wedge or a longer iron such as a 2 or 1. Nowadays, hybrids, which are crosses of woods and irons are popular. Most weaker players will opt to take out a 3 and 4 iron and substitute them with 6 and 7 and even 9 woods which give them more distance and help them get the ball airborne. A weaker player will actually lose distance with long irons. Hope that helps.

To help you in your search there are 14 clubs allowed for tournament play. A standard set would be 3 Woods ( driver 3 and 5 ) a standard set of irons would be a set of 8 ( 3-9 pw ) you would have a couple of sand wedges from 52* 56* 60* etc. and a putter to make 14. It has now become popular to replace long irons like the 3 and 4 with what's called hybrid clubs that are a cross between a fairway wood and a long iron. Good luck with your search.

According to PGA rules, the maximum a player is allowed to carry is 14. Most players have different wedges and fairway clubs that they use for different courses and conditions, so when they place a different club in the bag, they must remove one to keep the total at 14.
