People who wear contact lenses don't have to blink as often because the lenses prevents rapid drying and also protects from gusts of air and particles in the air. Protecting the eye is a reflex and you can do it consciously or with no thought at all.

stops the eye surface drying out, every time we blink we spread tears over the eyes, keeps them moist and healthy. We also blink in response to anything getting near the eye to keep it out. Drivers will know that when driving your car, if a stone of bird flies at the windscreen, you automatically blink, (and duck) even though you know it wont hit you.
