I am graduating from University with an Engineering degree and looking at buying my first car. My first question is should I buy new or used? And my second question is what is a good car to get? I want something that will last and is good on gas. My price range is about $20 000.

If you have a budget of $20k, then buy a new car. The last thing you want is to always be late or miss work because of car trouble.

Cars that fit your budget:

1. Honda Accord LX
2. Toyota Camry LE
3. Honda Civic Hybrid
4. Toyota Corolla
5. Honda CR-V
6. Toyota RAV-4
7. Nissan Altima

I've owned Hondas the most and they have never given me any trouble. My CR-V has over 100K miles and gets over 30mpg (on the highway). One advantage Toyota has over Honda is they offer a longer powertrain warranty (5 yrs vs. 3).

But you can't go wrong with any of the above.

Used is always cheaper both up front and longer term. Pay cash and you save on insurance as well. Your price range is on the high side most good used cars can be had for about $4,000 -$8,000.

As for what to get you need to figure out your needs. If you are traveling a lot a sedan is in order. If you mostly just commute a smaller car will suffice (better on fuel too!) If you need extra traction (snow and ice) an all wheel drive vehicle may be in order.

My suggestion is to stick with an American built car as they are the most reliable and longest lasting out there. This means a Toyota, Subaru, Nissan, Honda that is built in America.

Avoid European made cars as they will be in the garage more, the same goes for Fords & Chrystler products. They look good but will send you to the poor house fast in repair bills.

AS a auto technician to graduate engineer buy something new. Factory warranty is really helpfull when starting out. Things in your life will really change over the next couple of years. My recommendation is a fully loaded Nissan Versa with blue tooth phone interface and Continuously Variable auto transmission. Get the premium sound system with sub woofer. Electric power steering and features in that car like a back seat that works for 6 footers really versatile car. At $18,000 fully loaded a bargain too! And as a added bonus 36 miles a gallon
