Hi. A long shot I know!

My Great Grandfather came for Bavaria to London. Worked as a violin repairer. Married Margaret, had two sons and early in the 1900s, left his family and returned to Bavaria.

Anyone got any info at all about him please?

Thanks

Still leaves me with the bounder Hermann leaving his family and going back to Bavaria! That is the blind alley I am at......when do he sod off back and does anyone in Bavaria able to help?

Thanks

Thanks all so far. A real lot of good advice.

hjz. For you. His sons, Conrad b 1888 and Gerald b 1890, changed their names to that of mothers, Holdsworth. Joined the army in Canada. Thanks!

Hey Always Up For It!,

My path would be to the birth records for Margaret and Hermann. You can surf through the link URL I provided below, and find an approparite place to get the records from. Buy the records! They are worth it.

The 1891 census has Hermann Eisenmann aged 34 Violin Maker born in Bavaria living at Duedine House, Bedford Hill Road, Streatham London.

He was living with his wife Margaret nee Holdsworth aged 40 born Stepney, London, his sons Conrad aged 3 and Gerald aged 1 and his mother in law Emm Holdsworth aged 84.

The 1901 census shows Hermann Eisenmann, born Bavaria in 1858.

He was living at 41 Marina, Hastings, Sussex, with his wife Margaret and his mother in law Emma J Holdsworth.
His occupation was "retired string instrument maker".

His wife was born in Stepney, London, in 1851.

His mother in law was born in Hertfordshire in 1808.

The marriage records for July/Aug/Sep 1885 show Hermann Eisenmann marrying Margaret Jane Holdsworth at Lewisham in London.

There is a birth record for a Conrad Hermann Eisenmann born Apr/May/June 1888 in Wandsworth, London. This may be his son?

Other possible children, all with the surname Eisenmann, are:

Gerald Holdsworth born Jan/Feb/Mar 1890 Wandsworth (a good bet as the middle name is the same as the mother's maiden name)

Leah born Oct/Nov/Dec 1908 St James Westminster

Maud Elsa born Apr/May/Jun 1888 Islington

Sybil Doris born Jul/Aug/Sep 1891 Pancras

As Conrad Hermann and Maud Elsa were born round the same time at different locations, they can't both be the children of this couple.

The fact that none of these children is listed in the 1901 census is a problem. Maybe they died young? Or were living with other relatives?

Or maybe Hermann and his wife and mother in law were on holiday in Hastings at the time of the census?

If you want to buy copies of marriage or birth certificates you can do so at:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

Certificates cost £7 each.

PS Just had a look at the 1881 census. Hermann was living at 2 Charlton Street, Marylebone, was single, and his occupation was violin repairer. There's no listing for him in the 1891 census.
