let them pay... reciprocate an invitation
a gift is not necessary, only gratitude.
if you must, give your colleague a gift certificate
(one of your favorite restaurants) for her and
her husband to dine at @ a later date

I wouldn't buy something for them...until maybe a day after the dinner, and only if you don't pay. And I would do something simple. Like a small gift. I would offer to pool in when the bill comes though. Always offer to pay.

It depends on alot of things. If you are meeting them at the restaurant, then you really don't need to bring something. If you are meeting at their home then maybe bring a bottle of wine or some sort of small gift. (candles are good). If they are picking you up at home, then you could come back to your house for dessert and coffee.
If you have been invited, you never, never offer to pay the bill or tip. If you guys continue to dine out together or hang out, then you can exchange the bills but not this time.

No, don't buy them anything. That would make them feel obligated again. Let them pay. It's their treat. Offer to pay the tip. Invite them to your place or a restaurant for dinner in a month or so.

See if they grab the check right away. If not, offer to leave the tip or something. But if they invite you, you shouldn't pay for your own meal; you are a guest. Send a handwritten thank-you note the next day.

HIS husband ? Interesting work colleagues you have !
Is your husband invited too? If so , offer to share the bill ( in advance ). If not, is it a work-related meal?

don't buy them anything. it was an invitation coming from their hearts. but next time offer to have them over to your place for dinner. invite another couple over as well and make it a small dinner party. but no gift is needed to give them.

A simple gift should be enough. I agree with some showpiece. Besides most people reject the idea of letting someone else pay the bill.

The nicest thing would be to offer to take them out next time.
Oh, and offer to pay for the tip.
