Hi Emily their are two kinds of gallstones cholesterol stone and pigment stone. The cholesterol stone is however the most common type. Their are 80 % of patients diagnosed with cholesterol stone type and 20% with pigment stone type.
It may or may not run in families and it could be argued either way but it is more likely to be related to diet than a genetic factor,
My mum had gallstones a couple of years back she is 81 years old now no others family members have ever been known to have gallstones.
Gallstones can reoccur but with small amount of dietary changes and drinking plenty of filtered water and homoeopathic treatment the stones have not returned.
An operation to have mum's gallbladder removed would have been a disaster for her age and health conditions and she was not fit enough to be put under general anaesthetic to go through with it (even if she had been willing) which she wasn't.
She got her a course of homoeopathic treatment which lasted for 6 months and her problem has gone except the ringing in her ears.
I have instructed and watched her diet to be low fat and low cholesterol she doesn't drink coffee or be allowed much chocolate and fry-ed/spicy foods are a no no. The stones can re occur if dietary changes and drinking 6-8 glasses of water daily are not taken religiously.
Hope you get sorted out this is so so much pain for the patient.

A very common fallacy is to believe that diseases and health conditions are genetic. In very few cases such as congenital defects is this the case. But most of the time, not. What does run in the family is lifestyle and diet. If there is a lot of stress in the home, then both the parents and children are going to have adverse effects to it. Also, usually the family eats the same thing (same foods in the fridge, etc). This is where I disagree with the establishment, but a poor diet is the main culprit in illness. If the entire family has a diet high in saturated fat, then the entire family will have high cholesterol, for instance.
Gallstones can be caused by a number of things. See webmd.com for more info. But, basically they can be caused by high cholesterol over a number of years. Also, heavy drinking can cause them. It's possible for a parent to have them and not the children. Genetics has nothing to do with it.

No, I have had them ( at around 50 years old ) none of my family has had trouble with them. Gallstones is the calcium and impurities that normally pas threw with the urine naturally, sometimes it does not and it builds up like the calcium on a kettle or a wash machine, once they get too big they hurt like hell and have to be removed most hospitals five you them back ( ugh ) but impressive

Yes! Me, My Granny, My Mum, My Auntie and My sister have all had gallstones, the only way to completely cure it is to have your gall bladder removed, I had mine removed at 18, it's only a minor procedure, i was out of hospital in 2 days.

The doctor told me no, but I had my out at 19, my mother was 22, my cousin was 26 and my sister was 34.
So I would say there has to be some connection.
