Basically he is the Chief Executive Officer of the biggest organisation on Earth. Roman Catholics accept that he is the man and that is his 'authority'

Well in the same vein, what are the Queen's duties. Unlike the royal family, the Pope was forced into the hitler youth against his will. Edward the 8th, before abdicating, collaborated with the nazis and gave away secrets. Princess (pushy) Michael of Kent's dad was an officer in the Waffen S.S. But of course its all forgotton about now isnt it. Big up God's Rottweiler!!

As for his official duties; i haven't a clue. As for some of the things he seems to have made his duty - there's probably a huge difference. I daresay there will be some who take great offence @ what i'm about to say here - but the truth does sometimes hurt! The Pope, as the leader of all Catholics and the very icon of Catholicism itself promotes the spread of illness, death & misery in some third world countries. That is a fact. I have watched inumerable documentaries and such like focusing on the aids epidemic sweeping, viciously through these countries. The devastation is clear to see - on the face of each dying human being, ranging in age from very young children to people of our grandparents age. They are being ravaged by this hideousy with little or no help. When i first became aware that the majority of their so called "help" in some regions comes from missionaries and nurses i felt glad that there were @ least a few good people left in this world - the fact that they were Catholic concerned me very little one way or the other. At first. The people there rely on & trust in these "helpers" to give them advice and support; as well as what little care they can offer. It was only when i realised what this advice and support consists of that i became truly horrified! At a center run for aids victims and their families these Catholic nurses etc were handing out the worst possible advice to those poor, poor people, when really they should have been handing out condoms! Nurses were advising young men with HIV & aids to not use condoms - that they were evil and that they all have holes in them anyway so wouldn't even work! That they just should refrain from having sex completely especially as they were not married and it was sinful! They were dispensing this advice as if it were water - sending them home where it's obvious to us all that they are still going to be having sex with their wives; infecting yet more people and creating yet more young lives that'll either be destroyed by them having the illness themselves or by being orphaned because their parents do!!!! All of these nurses had been sent there and instructed to give this advice - the orders for this had, evidently, filtered down from "the top". There was a video taped interview with a high-up clergyman (very closely linked with the Pope and apparantly speaking on his behalf). In it he was questioned as to why these nurses were told to give such awful advice and i was truly sickened at the response. I wont quote as my memory is not that perfect but i understood the gist of it well enough to never forget the message it gave out! He said it was the popes' wish that this message be carried to these places and these people - that Catholicism doesn't in any way support the use of contraception or sex out side of marriage and went on to as good as say that those many people with the disease were evil too and must have done evil things to have ended up with it. I'll say no more - i shouldn't even need to.

Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." (Matthew 16:17-19)

The Catholic Church believes the Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock.

The Catholic Church teaches that when Christ placed Peter at the head of the Twelve, the first bishops..

The Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock.

The Pope, Peter's successor, is the perpetual and visible source and foundation of the unity both of the bishops and of the whole company of the faithful.

For the Pope, by reason of his office as Vicar of Christ, and as pastor of the entire Church has full, supreme, and universal power over the whole Church, a power which he can always exercise unhindered.

The Pope’s main roles include teaching, sanctifying, and governing.

With love in Christ.

The Holy Father's official title is "The servant of the servants of God", this might give you a general idea. He gets his authority from apostolic succession as the successor of Peter. This information is readily available. He is praying for you.

Why do people feel the need to insult others beliefs, how is that a dialog that can ever foster peaceful co-existence. It is easy to attack something when all you do is regurgitate things that the secular media, that is anti-religion in general, says about it.

Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are ye when they shall revile you, and persecute you, and speak all that is evil against you, untruly, for my sake: Be glad and rejoice, for your reward is very great in heaven.

Peace be with you.
