There are some similarities as well as differences. American Goal of the Vietnam war was to prevent the spread of communism. America gave the Communists a bloody nose in Vietnam, and this made the Communists give up their goal of "Burying the West". Even though N. Vietnam overan S. Vietnam, the Reds were tired and bloodied and gave up their dream of "Burying Capitalism".
The other major difference is that the American people this time have not turned their backs to the US troops fighting the war.
The current American goal in Iraq is to spread Democracy in the Middle East, which is very different from the Vietnam war goal of preventing the spread of communism.
The only similarity with the Vietnam war is that again America underestimated the number of troops required to achieve a quick victory.

I would say yes. With over 650,000, mostly civilians dead, there is noway now to win the hearts of the ppl. The infrastucture is pretty much destroyed. and now that it has been screwed up so badly, there is no way to prevent a civil war. Nice work Georgie boy.
