Depends on the airline. Most airlines no longer offer stand-by to paying passengers. After 9/11 and anyone beyond security had to be ticketed passengers, they mostly stopped offering stand-by because too many unconfirmed people were on the concourses. Stand-by is now reserved for employee's of the airline and their friends and family on buddy passes.

30 minutes before departure, the gate agent will take control of the flight and release any unclaimed seats. Then, depending on how many people are on the list, will start clearing stand-by passengers in order of listing. First are people who paid for a ticket, but don't have a seat assignment. Then employee's in order of senority, their family/spouses on their flight benefits and lastly, buddy pass riders in order of the employee's senority.

At 15 minutes before departure, any person not on board the aircraft or inline to board will be subject to losing their seat. Once the active boarding process has finished, any passenger not on board will lose their seat and those seats are released to the remaining standb-by's.

If you are on stand-by never leave the gate area until the doors are closed and the gate agents are running final paperwork. Even then, there could still be a seat available and we will allow a "runner" to fill the empty seat at the last minute right as we are ready to close the door.

It's a waiting game and sometimes will take waiting right up to the very last second.

Most airlines have screens at the gate for major airports, and you watch for your name to appear on the cleared list, or the gate agent will call you by name. If the flight fills up and there are no more seats, the remaining list is rolled over to the next flight and you get re-listed again in order of senority with the already listed passengers.

IF you are a paying passenger, who did not have a seat assignment, meaning you bought a regular ticket and didnt have a seat when you checked in, and if the flight is oversold, you will receive Involuntary Denied Boarding Compensation if no one will take the Voluntary DBC.

Basically, be patient and ready to run if necessary. When we have a few minutes before push back, we'll go down the list, call your name one time and move to the next if you dont act fast. Once you are cleared, board the plane, stow your items and take your seat as quickly as possible. We're usually letting on the last person with only seconds to spare. Even a one minute delay pulling out of the gate can add 30 minutes or more to arrival.

From what I've read; considering the sentence structure, spelling, punctuation, etc, I would say you're perhaps somewhere between 16 years old - 22 years old. My reason for giving the large gap of age is because it can sometimes truly be hard to define a persons age from their writing. The writing itself isn't a bad start, but there is room for improvement. The flow of everything is a bit stiff, as though you were unsure of how to word the movements of the characters. Placing the characters name before every action isn't needed, since we know its Ava from your starting point and content within the writing. The word choice may have just been 'awkward' due to this being for fun, but a simple word-change would fix that. I will admit that this strikes me as an angst fan-fic, concerning the genre, so I won't comment on the 'drama' other than to say that her actions in her sorrow are a bit stiff as well. Over all it's not that bad, but I would like to see more movement with the characters and perhaps detail added so that we can understand more of the story. Having just a small bit like this and asking opinions can sometimes be difficult because we're left with missing pieces. Good luck with your writing!

The gate agents have to wait to make sure all of the ticketed passengers that are there have boarded. Usually ticketed passengers have until 10-15 minutes before departure to actually give up their boarding pass and board the aircraft. The agents won't call out the names of standby passengers until right before the plane is ready to depart, so be prepared to board quickly if your name is called.

Depends on the flight, but if you can't stand the suspense, get a reservation, because sometimes it's after the scheduled departure time before you know.

You are usually the last person.

They have to load all the paying ticket holders and then count the seats against the tickets. And then go back & see what empty seats they can give to the standbys.

It also depends on how many standbys there are and how far up the list of standbys you are.

Normally 30 minutes before departure, but it may vary.
Take your bags to the check-in counter and approach a airline staff.

Let them know that you are there waiting to be checked in.
And always return, do not leave and disappear.
Several times ask them, they are humans and tend to forget
as there are lots of other faces in the qeue.

But be prepared to be rejected and plan ahead.

They let everyone else on the plane and then call standby's in the order they signed up for stand-by. so if you're first on the list and they have space, you'll get called... but if someone else is ahead of you, you might not make it. You'll definitely be the LAST person to board the plane.
