My father-in-laws' dog got out last week, she had been in season the few days before, but I believe this had finished. Her nipples have 'dropped' and she looks a little fatter?

you will not tell a difference only days after mating. When you say she had finished her season, do you mean she had finished bleeding? If so, this is the time they will allow mating. It's a mistake many clueless people make. They think that they want to mate while they bleed, they do not, they are fertile once the bleeding stops for about a week to 10 days afterwards.
There is still probably time to get to the vet for a misalliance injection to prevent pregnancy, then in 3 months time have her spayed.

Sounds as though the dog is preggie. My dog is just after having pups and if their teats are hanging and getting fatter then your answer is yes. She will start to nest a couple of days b4 having her pups and milk will come out of her teats. Good Luck

She will look fatter and probably eat a lot more than usuall...

Well, you can tell if your dog is pregnant by looking at there breasts if they have enlarge if she has gained weight and after she gets far along you can listen to babies inside of her and after that you can feel the little pups moving around.

erm yeah her nipples drop and she looks bigger, she may also behave differently and may eat more...you could just take her to the vet to get scanned...then you'll know for sure...but tell her to use condoms next time okay.

ok then if shes gettign fatter and her buzzim area is dropping down and shes sleeping a lot chances are shes pregnant.

I think its stomach grows a little bigger. lol. Oh and it eats more and becomes more violent.....I'm not sure If I'm describing dogs or humans now......lol

her titts are sticking out. that's usually the first sign. and if she's getting bigger.

place your finger in her anus and if it is warm and slightly moist she is pregnant, no doubt about it.
This is a proved scientific way, like a puppy pregnancy test.
