Heard that that area is actually flat, but an angel puts his/her finger just before we're born, thus giving the area a little 'dent'.... Saw it in the papers once, but that was a long time ago.. Sounds pretty cool though

It is called a philtum. An interesting fact is that in children who were exposed to alcohol while in utero (ie fetal alcohol syndrome) the philtrum is flat, sometimes not even there. That is one way to recognize them. Other than that, no idea what it is for.

when i was a kid we called it a snot gutter. as for the anatomical name, i do not know.
