I have a puppy and I feel bad that he needs to be in the cage almost all day. How can I get him to use a litter box?

TRAIN HIM/HER LIKE YOU WOULD DO ANY OTHER ANIMAL. MAYBE START BY PUTTING A LITTER BOX IN THE CAGE WITH HIM/HER. THIS WAY THEY GET USE TO IT. THEN DURING THE DAY OR WHATEVER TIME YOU ARE HOME WITH HIM/HER. PUT THE LITTER BOX IN A AREA THAT THE DOG KNOW SOMEWHERE OBVIOUS. EVERY TIME THE DOG DOES HIS/HERS BUSINESS SOMEWHERE OTHER THEN THE LITTER BOX, PUT ITS NOSE IN IT SO THEY KNOW THAT IT WAS BAD AND THEN MOVE THEM TO THE LITTER BOX TO SHOW THEM IT IS GOOD. THIS WILL ONLY WORK IF YOU DO THE PUNISHING RIGHT AFTER THE PUPPY DOES THE BAD THING OR ELSE THEY WILL GET CONFUSED. THAT IS WHY YOU WILL WANT TO DO IT WHEN YOU ARE HOME. WHEN YOU ARE NOT HOME KEEP HIM IN THE CAGE WITH THE LITTER BOX. AND WHEN YOU NOTICE HE/SHE IS USING THE LITTER BOX RIGHT THEN IT WILL BE TIME TO GET RID OF THE CAGE. THE KEY IS TO BE PATIENCE AND ONLY PUNISH WHEN THEY DID BAD AND AWARD WHEN THEY DID GOOD

It is not a dog's natural instinct to cover its waste. For this reason, this natural instinct, cats use litter boxes successfully. Dogs are different and distinct and do not use litter boxes. Why not try sending your dog to doggie daycare when you'll be out of the house all day? A tired dog is a happy dog, and they will play with him, exercise him and tire him out at doggie daycare.

you should feel bad that he is in the cage almost all day... why get a dog in the first place?

i mean ... i understand that you would want the pup to do it's business where it's convenient for you to clean up his mess ...

giving you an example ... i got a pug as a pup, i started by spreading a sheet of newspaper out, when he pees somewhere i put the news on the pee and let the smell sink in for a minute, let him smell and then clean the mess, never scold ... he will take it agains you, he doenst know what wrong he did. eventually he will look for the smell of the news and pee on it wherever you placed it, same with his poo ... it will just happen as if he has his own CR. now he wont pee or poo without any old news around.

to prove to you that it aint just a lucky try ... i got a shar-pei a few months ago ... i did the same thing and ... BINGO! ... Success!

but i got tired of picking up wet newspaper ... so i built them their own CR in connection to my workshop (so that they have easy access in and out) ... its dog matting placed on top of cement with 2 inches raised on metal matting ... when flushing it with water the pee and water goes straight into the drain ... no mess no smell ... they poo there too ... put that i pick up with news and throw in the trash (happens only twice a day anyway) ...

what a big load off of my shoulders following around the wet newspaper ...

by the way ... getting them used to transfer from news to the dog matting CR ... i just spread news on top of the matting for about 3 days ... then they got used to use the CR without the news ... PHEW!!!

good luck ...

Get him a kennel. Let him out to go outside three times a day. If he dose not go outside then he will have to poo in his kennel. I know that is mean. But he will learn eather go when it is time or sleep next to crap! :)

you don't want to try to do that. he may get use to it and then not do his buisness outside when he gets bigger.
