Basically all the "health food" store will give you is a less effective solution to the problem unless you know how to combine all the different substances yourself. I'd ask a few questions. Does she have congestion in her lungs? If yes, she needs an expectorant to expel the flem (The reason she's coughing.) If she has a cough with no congestion I'd suggest medicine with some form of codeine, that will stop the coughing reflex. You really should get this info from the Dr or get a home remedy book to be sure. For right now tonight, I'd give her tea with honey and a humidifier if you have one.

You are congested in your nose this is where the mucus comes from when your laying down you are flat hence the mucus as nowhere to go. When your are upright it goes straight down!!!! Gravity you know the saying what goes up must come down?? Reverse it its still the same! Hope your cold gets better soon.

Because the mucus is able to run up your windpipe?

Incidentally the way to get through a cold is:
About 400% RDA of vitamin C every 4 hours
Paracetamol every 4 hours
Caffeine tablets
Chesty-cough medicine per the dosage
Tickly-cough medicine like it's water

because when standing up the diaphragm (chest cavity) has more room to move, or is better able to. If you start to cough really bad, raise your arms above your head. It will help.
