If you are financing, before you do anything get a pre-approval for financing, pre approvals are good for 30 days in most cases. Credit Unions can be a great source, but you need to shop them as well. If you are going to a dealer, don't tell them that you have your own financing until the contract/P&S is signed, this is a profit center for them and can affect what they are willing to sell the car for.
If you are purchasing a new vehicle, that is easy, have a deal negotiated first with a manager’s signature that is good for the current month, this does not have to be on an exact vehicle, just one with the options that are desired. Don't pick a color that is difficult to locate. If it is a used vehicle, that you will be looking for, once you have a customer and deposit, you can doe the same with the dealer and make sure that you write on the contract, deposit fully refundable if the sale of your vehicle does not get delivered.
Now if you want to take the easiest route, sell you car, rent a car for a week and locate your new one. I know the rental will cost monies, but this is where so many people go wrong, they worry more about the cost of the rental than the gain on the sale of their vehicle and the ability to not be under the gun when negotiating a replacement vehicle. If you go to a dealer, do not tell them that you sold your car and need another. You just made your life more difficult.
Hope this help
Good Luck Mark

Market forces! Your buyer will give check that is no good. Or some weird cashers check no one will cash. Insist on real bank drafts or name brand bank casher checks. The last car sale went off so easy, Drove the new 2006 Pontiac GTO home and sold the 1997 Pontiac GTP the next day. I had the E-Bay ad ready to go. The previous one to that took a month to complete. So you will never know. I suggest detailing the car to be sold and empty out all but owners hand book. Then photo copy white out credit card info on any recepits you think the next owner would want.. Tire Warrantys, Last Oil change recepits, And any major work done in the last year. That should do it. Cleaned cars sell faster Good Luck
