colic can be due to a number of things , rich feed ,too much feed and not enough exercise, worms, ...have you DE-wormed now is the time autumn....bots small red worm and tapeworm.
change in feed too quickly can cause colic....
Do you know Colic is a bad belly ache and if it was a Human
you would go for a long walk have a good Fart and take some medicine for wind.. Horses depend on us to exercise them
and feed them consistently..change should be gradual.

It can be a LOT of things. You just have to observe very closely.

It could be the new hay, especially if it has some kind of mold or fungus in it. Was it rained on recently?

What else are you feeding her? Is it clean and fresh?

Is the new hay a change of diet? Some sensitive horses really react to a change to their normal diet?

Did she overeat in any way, especially feed or grain?

Did she drink too much water right after a hard ride? We only give them ten gulps of water if they've been going hard enough to be hot and sweaty, and then let them wait for an hour or more before letting them drink their fill.

Go to some good horse education web site and look up colic. It's too common, and also has too many causes to make a simple answer.

Good luck!

A change in diet can cause colic, but I would be very doubtful that new hay will be the cause. Have you changed her hard feed at all?

Colic can be caused by many different things: a impaction or blockage; twisted gut; fermentation in the stomach. It can also happen to mares that have recently foaled. I have seen this happen and it is caused by the internal organs moving back into position following the birth of the foal, and the gut can get twisted.

Ask your vet what kind of colic your horse had and he will be able to advise you what you can do to prevent it happening again.

Hope she is better soon.

it could be that the hay is really too rich for her, especially if you just switched from her usual feeding. also check for mold, and heat when you open a new bale. look for mold in grain too if you feed her grain that is. also try not to let a horse drink super cold water while they are still hot from riding. it can twist up their guts just as quickly as bad hay.
