I wish people would stop asking this question to make themselves feel clever, it's boring, and has no definitive answer. Through evolution, at what point did 'chickens' begin to exist?

No chicken - no egg. All things are created from a single cell. Now the question is was it a chicken cell or an egg cell. Since the egg is the beginning of animal life, it had to be the egg came first. Besides that, chickens can't come, but neither can eggs so the question has to come first. Now the question is who asked this question first, and why didn't they find the answer?

The chicken came first, God created animals, not eggs. Then as we all know it Adam and Eve came along and made everybody happy, by fornicating. God then threw these 2 out of the PURE garden. And multiplied they did, along with the animals. Then the EGGS came along.
So to your question, the CHICKEN came first.

that is a very old question which came first the chicken or the egg well to my opinion it would be the chicken that would have to lay the egg to start the cycle

And here is the ultimate answer:-

A chicken and an egg are lying in bed. The chicken is smoking a cigarette with a satisfied smile on its face. The egg is frowning and looking a bit pissed off. The egg mutters to no one in particular, "Well, I guess we answered THAT question!"

Simple. God created the animals, there for the animal has to exist before the egg will.

Genesis 1:21... So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

Ta da. Question answered with info backing up my statement.

The chicken.

If the egg came first it wouldn't have ever hatched without a chicken sitting on it - hence we would be without chickens altogether.

This question is a problem only for a believer in evolution. For those who believe in God, answer is simple, God created chicken which then laid eggs.
