Most of the above remedies seem helpful and worth trying. In addition I would suggest you consult a gum specialist--periodontist and go for a deep cleaning of your teeth below the gum line. It is expensive, but very helpful. Also helpful is holding a chewable tablet of vitamin C next to the canker sore till the tablet dissolves. It is painful at first but gets better as you hold. With a few daily applications the canker shrivels and is gone, usually next day. I also increase the doses of vitamin A,D,and E to a maximum daily recommended amounts, making sure thy are taken separately throughout the day. Repeated rinsing with sea salt instead of regular salt works better for me. Brushing gums and flossing with Stim-U-Dent after each meal may be painful, but it is necessary. Every bit helps. Good luck!

Abreva, Releev, and a few other OTC products work. You can save a lot of money and put some alcohol on a Q-tip and rub the surface as hard as you can stand it for a few seconds. HURTS LIKE HECK, but this is pretty much the same as the $10-20 products mentioned above. You might also want to get some OraJel or other benzocaine 20% product. Rub that one the sore first and after a couple of minutes, do the alcohol rub. You can also apply some benzocaine before a meal if it really hurts to eat.

You can also rinse with Maalox before a meal. (yuck) You can spit it out, though, instead of swallowing it. It coats them and helps relieve some of the pain.

ok first of all get yourself some orajel this stuff contains benzocaine and will numb any pain associated with the ulcer you have now to help the healing process you can't beat swilling your mouth out with warm water and salt, you want about 5 teaspoons in a tall glass and the water should be warm and not hot, take a small mouthful and swish it several times in your mouth and then spit it out and repeat the process until all the water has been used. Don't swallow the saltwater as this can induce vomiting. The orajel will sort out the pain and the saltwater solution will help to kill any bacteria and also reduce inflammation, the ulcer should be gone in about 2 days if you apply the orajel as told on the packet (every 4 hours i believe) and swill your mouth out in the morning and at night

Rinsing with warm salt water will help speed the healing. For prevention, you might try Rembrant's toothpaste for canker sores.

Defiantly salt. I heard rub salt on the canker soar, if you can. Then mix salt, and warm water together, and swish it around your mouth. Rinse, and wash. Then put a little tab of salt on the canker soar.

Use an orajel bonjella to ease the pain. Rinse your mouth out with a warm water/salt mout rinse...this will help to dry up the cancer. Avoid sugary foods. Do you get them often? If so speak with your doctor about changing your daily diets..and making sure you are not vitamin deficient in anything.

These things are the most painful things. I haven't found anything that helps them heal faster, but Orabase at least helps you suffer less.

:: Home remedies for Canker Sores ::

Other home remedies vary in efficacy. Certain techniques heal mouth ulcers for some people, but there are no treatments with widespread medical support. Most seem to be based on an antiseptic, an antacid, or both. Purported home remedies include the following:

- Apply antiseptic (such as anbesol) directly on a q-tip and place on mouth ulcers, clean the area out well. If caught in the early stages the mouth ulcer will not become full-blown.

- Gently clean mouth ulcers by roughening with a toothbrush; when clean, apply antiseptic.

- Swab mouth ulcers with sea-buckthorn fruit oil or hydrogen peroxide.

- Rinse regularly with tasty Ginger, Lemon & Honey Tea. All 3 ingredients have strong anti-bacterial properties. This has been found very effective by some people, with white caps disappearing within 24 hrs.

- Rinse the mouth with an antiseptic mouthwash (e.g., Listerine), which can relieve pain for a few hours.

- Apply carbamide Peroxide (Gly-Oxide®) directly to the ulcers, and swish around mouth.

- Rinse the mouth with salt water—1 teaspoon of salt dissolved in 1 cup (250 ml) of warm water (a.k.a. a saline solution).

- Take Lysine-L supplements.

- Rinse mouth and especially the affected area with sage tea 3 times a day. The improvement can be seen as early as within 24 hours.

- Paint half-strength gentian violet solution on the ulcer.[2]

- Gargle a mouthful of warm vinegar with a half-tablespoon of salt for about 30 seconds, 3 times per day; this may be extremely painful, immediate removal of white viscous cap on the sore, providing pain relief after rinsing quite quickly, but healing can be seen in as early as 2 days.

- Apply oil of cloves using a cotton swab or Q-tip. This is initially very painful, but will result in a period of time where the affected area is quite numb, allowing painless chewing or talking.

- Some have applied anise directly on the ulcer.

- Hold moderately concentrated alcohol in the mouth over the area of the ulcer, presumably because of alcohol's diuretic effect (and, likewise, the more concentrated, the more diuretic), although there is no direct evidence to support this.

- Bee propolis may speed healing and provide pain relief due to its anesthetic and anti-bacterial properties.

---------------------------

Antacid techniques suggested include the following:

- Swab the ulcers with Milk of Magnesia.[3]

- Apply powdered alum, a spice used in canning, dry directly to the ulcers— available in the spice aisle at grocery stores; this can be very painful at first, and then sore will be numbed.

- Make a paste of baking soda and water; apply directly to the ulcers.[4]

- Rinse the mouth with a baking soda-water mix—1 teaspoon of baking soda dissolved in 1 cup (250 ml) of warm water.

- Make a paste of crushed Tums (antacid) and water—apply directly to the ulcers.

- Avoid acidic foods such as tomato, citrus, soft drinks, and vinaigrette salad dressings.

- Apply a yeast-based spread such as Vegemite, Marmite, or Cenovis directly to the ulcer.

- Make a mix of half Mylanta and half Benadryl, and hold in the mouth for up to 3 minutes.

Combination therapies recommend the use of the antiseptic before the antacid; that is, swab mouth ulcers with hydrogen peroxide and then swab them with Milk of Magnesia.

A good temporary remedy for the pain of the mouth ulcer is to numb the affected area with ice. Although this may cause intense pain in the beginning, it is highly effective and lasts for about half an hour, depending on the number of ice cubes used and the time spent using the ice cubes.
