First, to those on this thread who have mocked this phrase, please allow me to explain what it literally means:

"Nam" means "devotion."

"Myoho" means the Mystic Law of cause and effect.

"Renge" means Lotus Flower, which, as the only plant that both blooms and seeds and the same time, symbolizes the simultaneity of cause and effect. (Once we make the cause, the effect is there. It may be felt now, or not for decades, but the cause has been made.)

"Kyo" means "teaching." "Sutra" means the same thing; it is a teaching.

So Nam-myoho-renge-kyo means "I devote myself to the Mystic Law of cause and effect as depicted in the Lotus Sutra."

This is not idol worship; it is not a "magical incantation"; it is simply the acknowledgment that for every thought, word and deed we commit, there will be an effect. It is the verbalization of that reality.

I have been a member of the Soka Gakkai International (a lay organization of 12 million members in 190 countries and territories, which promotes the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin) since 1998. I have chanted this phrase countless times in a twice-daily prayer ritual we call Gongyo. I have experienced, firsthand, the power of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, as have those around me for whom I've chanted. In sometimes breathtakingly dramatic ways.

You have within you the Buddha nature, or the potential for enlightenment; that is, the ability to see life as it truly is, not simply filtered through your cultural experience.

To those who are curious about the practice, I encourage you to follow the link I've posted here. It explains this phrase more fully.

Or, you may email me directly at tallgirl10538@yahoo.com.

I just chanted it and, well, I don't have much time to type, but let's just say you should avoid that particular incantation, the results can be quite disastr...

Seriously though.

Since the time of Nichiren (a Japanese priest who said that all the Lotus Sutra could be understood merely by chanting the phrase), many millions of people have followed his advice, chanting NAM-MYOHO-RENGE-KYO regularly as a means of improving their health, happiness, wisdom and compassion.

Let's just say that nothing *bad* will happen to you. It's a nice little placebo, like prayer.

for it to work you have to chant it from now until the next full moon without rest, taking a big glug of cod liver oil between each chant. You have to sit naked in the lotus position on an ants nest and your not allowed to stop or get up and go to the toilet for the duration. Anything you eat must come from your own body. This is the path to true enlightenment.

Hello andylefty.. :)

Absolutely Nothing will happen, I know..I used to go to SGI Buddhist meetings..this is a Japanese chant this Buddhist sect uses..there are many different forms of Buddhism..

Being a Christian I would not chant, I would read my Bible silently to myself..while they were chanting, I was asked never to bring my Bible back to their meetings..so much for accepting and not judging all faiths.. :(

In Jesus Most Precious Name..
With Love..In Christ.. :)
