Typically, when the doorbell rings, someone new comes inside, which your dog probably finds either interesting or threatening, depending on how you've trained him.
You can test for yourself though, that even if you just go to the door and stick your arm out far enough to ring the bell, he'll still likely go crazy. He can't make the connection that you're the one making the bell ring (although he might become somewhat desensitized to it if you repeatedly ring it when no one's there).
It's somewhat similar to the fact that every time my Basset Hound hears a loud vehicle go by (be it a motorcycle, semi, or whatnot), he jumps up on the windowsill and starts getting really antsy, because my boyfriend drives a loud truck, and he thinks it's him.
Gotta love doggie reasoning.

Because the high pitch of the door bell sounds like the howl of another dog to your dog, and he instincivly answers it.
Its the same reason your dog howls when the phone rings.
You can get a different ring to your door bell if you want this behaviour to stop.

:) mine think the same, but only since I was incapacitated for a brief while after an operation.
My guess is that your dog is trying to protect you, as you are the pack leader. (Have been told by a dog trainer friend that is why my dogs do this.)
Just as an aside, I've sussed why dogs DON'T like postmen.
Postman goes to every house in the street...but NO-ONE lets him in...so he must be unwelcome. Sussed this out while sitting with my leg propped up after aforementioned leg op. :O

the dog has learned that when the doorbell rings you go and answer it and someone is always there. so he thinks he has to announce the fact as well and greet who is coming in and check them out for you. it is commonly know as Pavlov's law. you have to train him not to react to this

Because he probably assumes that whoever is at the door will pet and fuss him which all dogs love.

Haha, your dog doesn't think its for him, he's curious as to who is trying to come into his territory and is protecting his surrounding area and the people in it.
