You can buy 'Airmiles' , many people sell them on ebay, you can also buy frequent flyers miles from the airlines, such as BA and Virgin, you can buy airmiles, this is often quite costly and I do not believe the deal that you have spoken about, as I used to work for a large loyalty programme. On BA you can clearly see where you buy more points, as I dont fly Virgin I am not sure.
If you collect Airmiles, then I would suggest you give them a call as they have some excellent offers, especially on the route you are wanting.
You will need to be booking around now to get the best price, as prices will start going up pretty heavily, I was made aware by a contact at the Flight Centre that one of the American airline was offering a return trip at £169 return, upto 13th December (0207 836 9502), not sure if they are still available.
You will find a London to New York flight will start from £249 at both Virgin and BA (no price fixing there then!).

You can get the flight for 271 with Icelandair flying from Heathrow to JFK, New York. If you are going to the USA for shopping, I wouldn't recommend New York though. Have you checked out Baltimore or Minneapolis? They have much lower prices and accomodation is also less expensive.
Have fun in the USA

Virgin Atlantic is pretty cheap already - £289 in economy class.
You can join their frequent flyer club to qualify for their "miles" scheme. You can also buy miles.......but I don't think whoever told you they bought £75 of miles and saved £150 on the flight is telling you the whole truth.
You can check out current flights and the miles scheme on the attached links.

The only reason to fly to New York is to go shopping. No other reason. New York is not the United States. To most Americans, it is almost a foreign country, a nice place to visit, but wouldn't want to live there.

I do not think one can buy air miles. Stii please confirm it from the particular airline whose miles are on sale, by calling on their toll free number.
