"be careful what you wish for"?

Question

can you tell me more ab. this quote, i never really understood it 'cause i can't apply it to my life, :)

i'd like to hear your comments; where does it come from, etc

"Be careful what you wish for" the rest of the saying is "because it may come true". It refers to some of our irrational thoughts where we wish things to happen, but we really don't mean it, and you then find out it came true. There were a lot of fairy tales that were based on this, the genie in the lamp, for example.

Coincidentally, just yesterday, my friend abruptly left her job of like 8 years, so she hasn't been on a job hunt in a while. But I recalled a few weeks ago, she was commenting on how busy she was. And how sick of quick meals & frozen food dinners she was making cause she doesn't have time (soccer practice, softball, girl scouts etc) to prep nice dinners (I'm a stay at home & had made a roast chicken that day) I said to her "remember when u told me that? Well, be careful what u wish for, you just may get it."

A small part of me knew I would have an autistic son, when we were talking about an autistic child running around at a game, 1 of my friends says (I was prego) "what would u ever do if you found out your kid was autistic?" (her kids are average) I replied " I would do my best like anything else. I would find out what he likes, what his strengths are & try to make him happy like any other kid". Rubbing my beautiful son in my womb, who looks like Brad Pitt by the way I kid u not, he is going to be a gymnast I think. He was watching gymnastics, laughing & flipping around on the beds. Would not stop, I was starting to worry, then he starts jumping off my night stands, and "sticks it"! He is so muscular & skinny, I just want him to be happy. Soo sorry so long, but these are true (ironic) accounts.

I imagine it came from old wise men(or woman!)

It means that what you think you want is not always what you actually want. Sometimes when we long for something, the idea of it is actually better than the reality. People don't always think through the consequences. Dreams can turn into nightmares in other words. Lots of people think their life will be sweet if they win a million dollars but the problems and strains of coming into so much money has caused people a lot of heartache and struggle and worse;caused people to take their own lives.

to apply to your life you could wish to get into a realy good college or find a realy good house, but then it will be so far away from home you would no
meaning: do not wish harm to anyone coz it will come back at u
t be able to see your family.

Just as children do not have the foresight to know that if they eat a box of cookies and pig out on candy that they will have a stomach ache, sometimes we do not have the wisdom and foresight to fully understand what it is we are asking/wishing for and the consequences that may follow.

I went market with my mom for shopping and i saw one dress i told my mom i wish that if i own that particular blue dress it was beautiful...but yes expensive also my mum loves me lot and she buyed that beautiful blue dress i was the happiest person ....when i came to know that its my little bro birthday and due to my dress she left with less money n didnt buy anythinf for him i felt so bad and wish that i didnt ask my mum for that dress......

I think now u got the point.....so be careful what u wishing it may lead to ur happiness but sadness for someone and it might happen u are wishing for wrong thing......god bless you

In Buddhism it has deeper significance-your thoughts and desires influence your karma but the material things you imagine will bring you happiness can often be the cause of suffering.

I am not sure where it comes from but I think it is very wise. I believe Allah knows us best and knows what is good for everyone for us and that is why He provides for it.

Our prophet (pbuh) tells us that some people get sick because they are at their best when they are sick; humble and patient. Allah knows that if they were healthy, they would turn to be tyrants. Some people are meant to be poor because this is when they are their best. They could ask for money and have it, then turn to dominant, powerful, money-worshippers or terrible misers or spend it in haram stuff.

I am sure you have come across couple who had no children and spent a big deal of their lives praying and trying their best thinking that they will only be happy when they becaome parents. The opposite happens when they have a child who grows up to turn their lives into hell.

Have you seen 'Bedazzled'?
This is why when we pray for things we ask Allah to grant them to us if they were in our best interest.

a friend of mine once told me "i wish i had a husband".
within a week she was asked out by 5 (count them - 5) married men.

when my stepdaughter was around 12 she told her mom "i wish you weren't my mother". she hasn't spoken to her since. stepdaughter now is 22 with 2 children.
