If a 14 year old is on anti-depressants is he more likley to look to illegal drugs to self medicate later on in life?

Probably not. Untreated sufferers are the ones who are likely to self medicate with street drugs and alcohol. But there's a whole different question about whether a 14 year old should be on antidepressants. Certainly some anti-d's have been linked to an increased suicide risk in teens.

It's impossible for me to say whether a person will take illegal drugs later in life because they take antidepressants as teenagers but it's not likely to be because of that alone if it does happen. They're generally(I don't know about every single one) non addictive unlike many illegal substances and are actually legal if they're prescribed anyway. If they were doing weed or even taking tranqs it would make it much more possible but if they work like they should they'll actually be less likely to want to self medicate.

As long as he is on the correct medications he shouldn't have to. On the other hand, this question is almost impossible to answer because there are so many variables involved.

Just because he is depressed and he is taking medication for it does not mean he is 'stable'. You have to consider his home life and what goes on in the home. Is it dysfunctional? Are the parents mentally stable? Please, don't take offense to any of this, I am just answering the question. Do not take any of this personal. It is not ment to reflect on you, the person asking the question.
What about his life at school? Is he hanging around the 'right' crowd? Any one of us may have a situation arise in our lives where we may take a wrong road in life and try illegal drugs.
There is always the possibility that he might, just like anyone else.
If you notice changes in his behavior, then have his medicines re-evaluated. Good luck.

It all depends on his condition of mind at that time. Yes, if the mind is already dark/not clear then he can fall prey to it easily. So, try these things. Read about Bach Flower remedies. Beleive me they not only attck some mind symptoms but will also help to clear the mind which will eventually help him to feel better. Ask him to do some activity any exercise or game he likes. Also, use Triphala churna to clear the toxins from his body and mind. Read about Yoga and depression. Also, give him hot ginger tea. Try with diffrent soups which he likes. Read and try Indian recipies. The reason is realted to taste and taste (spices) will bring rasa (taste) in his life, back. The reason I am giving these pointers is because you and him need to tak charge of his life rather than a doctor or anyone else and so you need to understand these things well. Let me know if you need to talk with me in detail as I cannot type many things here.

Seems as though he would be LESS likely to turn to illegal drugs.

Anti-depressants balance out the chemical imbalance in the brain therefore, a person would have no need to self medicate.

Good you seeked help for him.
