To change your desktop to black, right click on an empty are of the desktop and click Properties. Click the Desktop tab. In the Background box select None (I think its at the top of the list.) And for the colour select black, then click Apply, then OK.

To change the appearance of Windows, you have to be in Classic mode not XP mode. Click the Themes tab, and from the drop down list choose Windows Classic.
You have a huge number of options to choose from. I like my windows with Arial font, on purple fading into black. I suggest you make one or two changes at a time from the list and try them out. Its easy to forget which option changes what until its too late!

Hi there,

on your desktop, right click and then select ,, and then adjust the colour for each item in the scroll down menu. Be warned though, change the text colour at the same time or you will not be able to read anything on your monitor..

By the way, I take it you are using XP sp2 or higher, I don't believe that 98 gives you as many options.

Be carefull.... I once set a black background, and had black text and black windows and black everything... I though it would look cool... I clicked "Apply changes" and realised... I could not see the black text, or windows or drop down menus or ANYTHING against the background... and was stuck with a black screen and a rather embarrased look on my face. it took a lot of time and effort to sort that out.

Go into Microsoft paint and use the bucket to pour into the white screen on the right of the bucket. Save that as black.jpg in your "My Pictures" folder. When you open "Properties" on your Desktop and then click the "Desktop" tab and your "black" will be there.
