The staple of all Greek cooking is olive oil, which is in almost everything. Many people attribute this to the healthier lifestyle of Mediterranean peoples, and their longer lives. Tomatoes, onions, okra, aubergine and potato are all important. Beef is rarer in Greek cooking, because the country's terrain favours sheep and goats over cattle. Fish is also very imporant in Greece, especially on the coast, along with octopus and squid. Greek wine has seen a huge upsurge in its quality since the 1980's, now it is at last drinkable!

Greek meatballs with lemon sauce is absolutely delicious. Spanakopita (Spinach and Greek goats' milk cheese in filo pastry) is also tasty and Moussaka is always a winner.
