Do keep the following in mind :

Make sure you are buying from a trusted source like friends, family or have been referred by a trusted source. An auto consultant is best avoided. Make sure to look for the original papers and see how many ownership changes there have been. Check out the general condition of the vehicle if you are familiar with cars or else take a good mechanic and ask him to vet the car. Particularly look if the car has been involved in an accident. Also check the general upkeep of the vehicle including how many kms it has been used. Check the condition of the tyres etc while negotiating the price. Nowadays Maruti offers second hand vehicles from its own dealers called TRUE VALUE. It is better to buy from them. Also you get some free services like for a new car. Make sure the car's tax and insurance have been paid while negotiating the price as these can add upto a tidy sum. Also cars registered in other cities or states should be avoided.

As with buying anything you need to do your homework. Don't walk into anything blind. Make sure that you are aware of the flaws that come with that specific make/model car. Sometimes there are features or parts that go at almost exactly the same time on cars. If you ask a mechanic that works on them usually they can tell you some of those things. Also check into the up keep of that vehicle. You don't want to get something that it takes lots of time and money to get parts for. Make sure that you don't just jump on something becuase it looks like a good deal. There are usually problems there. But don't let anything go that you are that interested in. Good luck.
