There is much hope that man will necessarily choose one world language for the benefit of all mankind.
The UN will improve in prestige and in efficiency, that national leaders there may trustfully agree on a Convention about World Language, like the Conventions for World Trade, World Health, World Labor...
All nations will make progress much faster and more synchronically thanks to a common language, and anywhere we go we will have the same impression as staying in our homeland.

Let me guess... your native language is either english of arabic, right? The truth of the matter is that there are too many cultures all over the world and everyone, if they have any pride, want be what they are. A russian person would want to speak russian, and an indian person would want to speak Hindi, or whatever his name language is. Even if one regulated language was made for the wrold population, the native lnague would influence it and it would diverge into many different dialects, if not a whole new pidgen language.

Because it's disrespectful to other countries and their heritage. In one swoop you dismissed French German Spanish and Italian from Europe and the world, which I'm pretty sure a lot of people speak. Think of phrases that won't exist anymore. Buenos Dias, Schadenfreude or tres bon chance all disappear. And this is just Europe, you've also annihilated all the African languages bar one, and who knows what you'd do to Asia. Chinese Mandarin is the majority but there are regional versions, not to mention Korean which is a stand alone as it has no contemporary ancestors to the tongue and Japanese which is completely distinct and culturally7 laden.

In short, a single language would butcher our cultural identities,.

Haha! That would be very comfortable for you I guess cos you speak English and you wouldn't need to learn any other languages to be able to communicate with the rest of Europe. But how would you feel if you were let's say Czech. Would you give up your language? Have you heard about the phenomena that lots of people feel insecure without their mother tongue that if they leave their mother country and decide to live somewhere else they are afraid of losing their identity with their mother tongue? So it's not that easy. And let's confess that life would be much more boring that way. Isn't it wonderful that you can say I love you in several languages?

and besides the issue of national or regional identity and pride, that was mentoned by others, languages are such a treasure!! i m personally sorry that some language vanish in the passing of time, but i guess its a law of nature. every language has its one personality, colour, charm, emotion. in every language there are words and expressions that cannot be translated in any other. and they are like living organisms and change along with the conditions their speakers live in. they register historic memory, and common wisdom. dig into a language and u will find incredible parts of truth about the human experience. i dont know if u guys figured that out by now but i just love languages, lol! all of them!!!
the solution would be to invent a machine, drug or method that makes it childsplay to learn a language, so we could all learn many of them. ??

It may be easier, but I love to learn languages. We would increase the worldwide unemployment level as we have no jobs for language teachers, translators and lexicographers in their chosen language. Languages are fascinating and if we were restricted to just three we would lose a lot of heritage, history and local information.

I have been saying this for years....

It would make the whole world go round easier, and we could share so much through a common language - and maybe even get our orders in foreign restaurants correct!

Later...

Language is communication! In this present age we can all communicate through our computers and,- if not already able to do so, the computer will one day be able to translate speech directly. Eventually and without even trying, there will only be one common language throughout the world.

As Chinese is the most widely spoken language shouldn't it have been Chinese, Spanish and English. I think thats the top 3. It may be Chinese, French and English. Let's leave things the way they are and everyone's happy.

Let me guess, English is your native language, but you see other people have other native languages and they want to keep them! I think all people should learn English so there is a language in which all can communicate, but it doesn't mean they should forget their native languages.
