The only way to catch this disease is by being bitten by a mosquito, which has previously bitten a person or animal which has the disease.
Some practical methods:
-- Use mosquito repellent,
-- Make sure your window screens are in good repair
-- Eliminate standing water (i.e, prevent the mosquitoes from breeding)
-- clothing to reduce your exposed skin
-- Avoid areas where the disease is endemic (i.e., naturally occuring)- 2nd link below has a map of US and locations of reported diseases ... please note that the presence of a person with the disease does NOT mean it is endemic, it only means that a person caught the disease somewhere, and was diagnosed at the location given. The presence of animal-borne disease is the greater risk.
