I was horrified that KimmyS actually said to put tobasco on this person's child's fingers to make her stop biting her nails. Anyone agree that that is pure child abuse? I hope that parents of grade schoolers and all children know that nail biting is not going to kill a kid. I would find out what is making my child want to bite in the first place.

Tobasco can make a little tongue swell up and children can die from that. What do you think?

I think that putting stuff on their fingers is only going to make the problem worse. If it really is a problem. It is actually a comfort habit. Why are children having to comfort themselves? Isn't that a parent's job? Find out why first. That is where I would focus my attention. Do you agree or not?

Yes, it is considered abusive. Ask a CPS worker. In the USA, it is considered abuse and yes, small chidren have died from having tobasco put in their little mouths!!!!!! Their tongues swell up and block their air passage And Traci? I did point out that there are other reasons kids do these things and I also pointed out that these types of things need to be handled with compassion, not punishment!!! Germs? Kids are little germ factories. Do you all wash all your kids toys down every hour to make sure they are germ free? Get real. Some of these answers are right on the money. And some most certainly are not.

Finally someone who agrees with me!!! It's amazing what some parents here recommend! Tabasco sauce is often recommended for nail biters, thumb suckers, biters, and children who swear. Children bite their nails and suck their thumbs because they need to feel comforted. Children bite or swear to gain attention and to feel powerful. They don't need to be abused for these behaviors. I have even read where parents recommend biting children back, spraying lemon juice or Binaca in the child's mouth for children who bite or swear. Parents need to stop and think about what is causing their child to do these things before they resort to abuse. When I see parents who answer in these ways, it makes me feel that parenting classes should be mandatory before having children!

where in the world did you hear that Tabasco will kill a child? My girls have had Tabasco on their food since they were younger than 2 years old and they are now 6 and 8 years old, both still very much alive. It is not child abuse what so ever. That method has been used for many years and for many things. Only thing it does is sting the tongue for a minute. You aren't going to put the whole bottle on their hand or shove it down their throat.

Her biting her nails may be nothing more than that, biting her nails. My daughter bites hers all the time, she also bites her toenails, it's nasty but she does it anyway. The whole reason you don't want them to do it is because of germs. My daughter does it just because. There is not some deep psychological reason in it. I think you are over reacting and need to stop trying to find a meaning in something so simple. People are too quick in trying to find a problem with everything when it comes to kids. Ever occur to you that the child is just being a kid?

Tobasco sauce is not harmful for a child. It will not kill them. I have a freind who used this technique but it did not work. She then started putting sour lemon on their tongues when they were doing a bad habit that included the mouth and that worked. It is not child abuse. It is called behavior management. Psychologists use these type psychology all the time. Maybe not tobasco sauce, but the will tell you to wear a rubber band around the wrist and have family members snap it when you are doing the " bad thing".

I don't think it's child abuse, but she should find a more constructive way of having her stop or find out if the girl needs therapy or the whole family for that matter, I think the only thing it will lead to is good taste in hot sauce,

Yes, I agree with you, when I was younger my Dad put pepper on my fingers... i nearly choked to death! Well not literally but I choked pretty bad. Adn Tobacco is even worse, its a bad habit int eh first place why force it on your kids, i think doing that to children is very cruel! It could casue medical problems or addiction to it or possibley death is a few cases probably. Yes I think it is abuse, they should talk to their kids before punishing them, they could have emotional problems and tobacco could make it worse because it may make them feel worse or feel like they are being punished and not know why. So yes I do agree with you.
