Ruth
some of the suggestions are good, like swimming (if u can swim), jogging, cycling these are all good forms of exercise, the gym ball is very cheap and is very good at toning the body but you have to be very careful using this as you could end up injuring yourself. These balls have been around over 40yrs and were/still mainly used the by physiotherapy profession (were mainly used for patients who had suffered strokes).
If you can get a fitball/gymball/swissball then do so but if you experience pain then you must stop what your doing. with these balls you can do many of the exercises that you can do at the gym if you have some small free weights. Check on a search engine for exercises that you can do using one of these balls.
Someone else mentioned skipping, another great way to shape up. There are many different ways to shape up which are cheap and you can do them in the privacy of your own home. BUT one imporatant factor which many people have not mentioned is your diet, unless you eating sensibly, (NOT dieting cus as soon as u resume eating you'll gain what you lost) you wont lose / tone up.
I hope this is some help.

Do anything. Point is , always keep your goals in mind in whatever you do. Little things, like walking instead of parking closer, taking the elevator or using the escalator. When you are drying off after a shower or tying you shoes, don't bring your leg up and rest it on something, bend down to do the work. This will keep you flexible, and make the other things easier. If you are watching TV or talking on the phone, use the time wisely by doing some AB work or push ups. If you want to start a routine, you can do push ups( chest, tri's,shoulders), dips from a chair(triceps) and if you have any weights curls(biceps) and bent over rows(lats, back). When you are first starting, aim for 10 to 12 reps. As you progress and want to get bigger, add weight and lower to 8 reps. You can vary the grip or spacing of the exercises to hit the muscles from other angles. As you progress, lower rest between sets from 90 secs to 60 secs .And if you are doing enough sets and exercises, split your workout between push(chest, tric, shoulder) one day and pull(bic, back) the other day. Do some squats and lunges on your pull day and keep the same logic as with the other parts of the body.

check it out, if you ae not confident to step foot in a gym yet( as i once was a chunkster) Water is the best fat flusher period, forget all the fad diet pills. When ever you vacumm the floor, try to incorporate different aerobics ( when nobodys home of coure lol) Just when ur cleaning house, go the extra mile a pick something up, set it back down, and pick it up again. Its nott too hard. You don't need no dumb TAI-BO VIDEOS, just crank the music when you cleaning the house and just cut a lil junkfood out of your diet everday. Dance while you are cleaning you house and have fun with it and you will be working out and cleaning and doing a double wammy. Trust me, i am a doctor and my mom, sister and girfriend do the sam thing and feel way healthier and look forward to cleaning/exercising. I'm not gonnq lie and say youll lose 50 pounds a month but i guarantee you will look thinner ever week. Fell free to emai me if you want, I got a bunch of tips, trust me, that weight will melt in no time and will stay gone, unlike some diet fsd bills. i hope you enjoyed this, just as i enjoy tryin to help u

I don't know your age Ruth, but you sound like a young person ? In that case get a friend or two, or three to join you and have a regular get together either walking, swimming, DVD session, Gym Balling or what ever you decide as exercise in rotation at each other's houses. It can be fun and also much much more motivating to do. GOOD LUCK !!
PS it works if you are NOT a youngster too !!!

try working out in your on home and dont forget that if you are skinny and want to grow bigger, doing to much working out will make you smaller and if you are fat , we all gotta learn the fact that we cant lose weight at once ,They both take time and needs patience. You can use this site and do the excersises that are under the title of 'barbell' http://www.exrx.net/Lists/Directory.html cos they are easy to do in home with the help of some weigh plates and bars.Good luck

What about a gym ball? I bought one and it only cost me about a fiver. Or you could try an aerobics or circuit training class they only cost a couple of pound a class.
