Hello, i am from brisbane and my dog is being attacked around sundown everyday by horsefly's, even if they r not biting her she is freaking out by the buzzing noise they make flying around. She works herself into a panic and runs around until she is exhausted and coming into the summer months i don't know how she will cope. I have looked on the net and found little help rather then a fly trap from the usa. If anybody has any ideas i would appreciate hearing from you, thankyou very much........

Go to an animal feed store and buy fly repellant spray that you would normally use on horses. It will keep the flies from landing on the animal, but they might still fly around her a bit.

If you are looking for a spary on stuff for the dog I use Nature's Defense it is an all natural fly spray and safe for use on dogs.
If you are having problems with your dogs ears getting chewed up I use SWAT or Flys Off both are a cream that you apply on the tips of the ears or where ever. They are safe for dogs and can be used over open wounds. They will stay in place for a day or so and then you just apply another layer of the cream.
For fly traps I like the plastic bag ones the best but they only work on certain types of flys.

your local feed store, if there's such a thing where you live, has fly repellents for fly and have a particular one for horse flays and deer tics. I'd try there. Also I have used an electric fly traps, not the blue light ones that hang on your patio but the ones made for horse barns.A bowl of sugar water with honey will draw in the biggest horse flays. It sounds like your horse fly problem is almost something you can set your watch by and if this is the case, your vet should very experienced with this problem from all his or her customers and should be able to advise you on a fix

The best thing you can do is put your dog in the house during the day. We have horses and therefore a lot of horse flies in the summer time. If you can take her to the vet you might ask him and see if he has any suggestions. Just be careful of what you put on her and how much. Many sprays can be toxic to dogs. I dont know what products are offered in your country so i cant help suggest anything specific.
Try to not feed sweet feeds to your other animals and keep trash away .

I am in South Africa a home made remedy that works for our dogs is a mix of paraffin (kerosene) about 1 teaspoon on citronella (depends on the grade strength pure or in a carrier oil) per 1litre of paraffin and 1/2 teaspoon eucalyptus oil. Mix the citronella till the smell is stronger that the paraffin smell, add eucalyptus just to make the smell better (not active ingredient) Paraffin / citronella can be used in a garden candle to keep flies away. Here the paraffin is called lamp oil / laurel paraffin it is not the same kind that gets used in engines it does not burn skin if you have on yourself. Put the mix in a spray bottle and spray the dog. The citronella chases flies away but it is too strong to use without the paraffin.
