I suppose we would still have clashes over economics or outlandish tyranny, but if it was definitively proven that there was no afterlife or God, would we still have wars?

We would always find something. The God thing gets us going very easily - but there will always be people who need power from the masses. If they can't get us going with a good "My Jesus can beat up your Mohammad," they'd start a war over bread or oil or who should win the next, "Survivor."

Of course we would still have wars.

Most wars have been fought over power and wealth. Religion has only been a backdrop used sparingly to galvanize the public to fight a war they will never benefit from, but the leaders of the people will.

Religion is rarely the cause of war. If you disagree, I would love to have a debate on the issue.

pathobby9,

Mankind has never been short of excuses to fight wars. Here are just a few of the most frequent causes:

1) One wants what another has, (cleaner water,
larger forests, more energy, better weather,
less pollution, natural resources, even sex
or breeding partners).
2) Boundary lines, etc.
3) Possessors of which color, or belief system,
or genitals, or family name, or even species
should be in charge or have power.
4) One wants to get rid of something they don't
want and seeks to dump it on the other.
5) One wants a bigger or richer "tax", or "tithe",
or "paying customer" base.
6) Revenge.
7) Intimidation to gain or retain power.

See how many more you can come up with!

Of course there would be wars! Man is a mighty beast who survives on ego, possessions, personal power and domination. Even the game of Monopoly brings out the worse in people as everyone tries to be Donald Trump, or do you remember the game War? You would play with friends and mark "your territory" in the dirt and declare war on eachother? As George Carlin has stated in many the skit, "Everybody wants stuff- the more stuff, the better they feel about themselves".

As long as there are evil people, there will be wars.

But stupid people armed with religion are probably more dangerous.

I can name a coupla wars done in the name of religion:

The one we're in now.
The crusades
The Revolutionary war (freedom of religion)
any and all wars between muslims and jews (there are many)

I'm not saying religion is bad, but when evil infiltrates it, it leads to baaaaad things.

Of course we would, as you said the economic, tyranny reasons, and lets not forget the political ideology, saddists, etc.

wars are fought for economic reasons not religious ones. Merchants just find people who will get emotionlly involved and so stirring the religious pot is the easyest way to raise an army. There is no relgion whose teaching supports war.

let me guess you are under 20 right??

The wars are the best way to protect the USA and Jesus from the evil doers and the muslims, athists and the terrorist. God will smite his enemies, and WE are HIS INSTRUMENT HERE ON EARTH. With the Presidant Bush and the Army, we will be safe and be fruitful and multiply , as is predicted in Genesis.

Yes, we've been fighting since the beginning of time, if you were to believe in cavemen, for example, they killed 'different' tribes off, just because they were different. And they had no religion.
