The best modern translation of the Bible is the New International Version, it is the most accurate and has the benefit of using modern English combined with advances in scholarly research into both language and more recently dicovered texts. Beware of Paraphrases, e.g The Message which is very easy to read but is not so accurate.

you can pick one up for nothing ( although feel free to offer a dollar or two contribution to cover the printing cost but you not have too ) from any one of the witnesses of Jehovah.
They used the KJV until producing a modern english version in the 50's The New World Translation. It is published by the international bible student association.

Beware of the newer versions they omitt total verses and leave out words. Below are just a few omitted verses
Revelation 1:11 I am the Alpha and Omega.
1 John 5:7 For there are three that bear witness in heaven, the Father, the Word and the Holdy Ghost and these three are one.
Romans 11:6 but if it be of works then it is no more grace.
Acts 8:37 I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God
1 John 5:13 and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God
These are just a few and not listing the ones that the newer versions have changed words in.
I personally would stick with the King James Version

Well the truth is none, you need to find God with out reading a story book written by man. The bible has not been translated correctly, The truth is within the bible but before you can find it you need to understand man more, work out how he cheats, and con's the people of the world, and then uses Gods name to kill, when you understand man, then you will be able to understand the true meaning of the bible

I like the NIV Study Bible. It has sections which show which archeological finds back up the bible as a historical document and sections that explain the customs and laws of the time so that the Bible becomes better understood..

NSRV - the New Revised Standard Version. It's apparently one of THE BEST translations available now.
Do NOT get the King James Version - there are some "errors" in translation. Also, the english used in it is archaic, and some of the words used then have different meanings than what they have today. English is a living, evolving language: get the best current translation.

'Hush.Hush' (above) speaks quietly but authoritively. Don't believe everything you are told to, and don't believe anything before hearing the alternatives - the book he mentions is more believable than the bible because it is based on facts. You're probably already familiar with many of the stories and passages from the bible - now try opening your eyes and mind by reading some of Richard Dawkins' book.
