Yes a lion is in the cat family but however you cant keep one as a pet unless it is proplerly trained.

"Cat" is not the exact term I think. Although, many people call lions and other species from the felidae family like tigers, cheetahs and leopards "big cats".
The word "cat" is used as a synonymous, instead of "felines" they call them cats .
I'd better say that a lion, (just like a domestic cat) is a feline.
