20# Short Haired Manchester Terrier just started drinking 3-4 times the amount of water he normally drinks.Normally eats 3 times a day,and drinks about 12 oz.-6 times a day(3 with food and 3 inbetween meals)(now drinking 16-20 oz. 12+ times a day).He is 6 years old and still very playful, eats the same amount of food.I live in a rural area and it's cold outside.3 days ago I was walking him at night he jumped in some tall grass and ran out spooked(it pulled hard on his harness)(started drinking more the next morning). He gets walked 5-6 times a day, sometimes more, and doesn't seem to want to go out more.I keep it 72 degree's inside(although he always sits infront of the forced air heater, always has). Can't get into the vet for 5 days(she doesn't think it's an emergency). He's up to date with his shots-heart-worm too.Am I over worring, should I wait for his appt. or take him into emergency vet clinic?Or should I wait and see if he returns to normal?

that is the first symptom of diabetes.. this is fairly easily and cheaply managed in dogs, but will cause blindness if not managed..Your vet can test for this quickly.

Cushing's Disease
Definition:
Cushing's Disease, or Hyperadrenocorticism, is the production of an excess of adrenal hormone, or, more particularly, corticosteroids.
I wouldn't hesitate to take him to the vet or emergency clinic. Even if it is just for piece of mind.

Hyperadrenocorticism
Examples:
One of the most common, and often the only visible symptom of Cushing's Disease is a drastic increase in thirst, which causes excessive water intake.
Diabetes is also a possibility. The following website is very informative. So many diseases we are unaware of.

My dog stopped drinking and we found out he has Addison's Disease.
Good luck!

Get your dog to the VET immediately. I know from experience as mine showed the exact same symptoms. I was late in getting her there, as one morning she collapsed, and her tongue was hanging out and shallow breathing. I don't want to scare you but it sure did scare the living daylights out of me. She had type 1 diabetes, and I ended up having to giver her insulin 2 times a day. That was 5 years ago. She passed away in the night in her sleep 5 months ago, but I was responsible for her, and I had a choice of either putting her down, or taking care of her. I chose the later, and eventually she did develop cataracts and could only make out shapes, her momma and other sister would look after her and it was the most wonderful time we had together. She was only 8 years old. I miss her but I now take even better care of my dogs and even her daddy who is 14 years old (Dane/Lab mix). I know that when the time comes I have to make that decision. But talk with your vet, and visit them often. You may have to face the choice i had. Good luck to you and your decision.

Your dog needs to see the vet. If this is something that has gotten you concerned then that is what you should do. Take him to the vet.
It could be a number of things. Cancer, Diabetes, thyroid problems, or nothing at all. Only a vet can tell.

Good luck!

To dogs as well as humans, excessive water drinking indicates a. diabetes or b. renal problem (or c. damage of the ureter, but I suppose he pees normally or you'd notice, right?)If you can go to the human pharmacy and buy strips that are urine reagent, and test your dog's urine for glucose, it could be helpful to the vet, although she'll run a blood test for sure.
