I bought 4 large double-hung vinyl frame windows at a garage sale for next to nothing but they are too large to install in the space intended in the traditional manner. Can I turn them on their sides and still have them function properly? They are intended for a breeseway/patio room.

You can install them sideways. However depending on the quality of their construction they may not function properly or smoothly.

Firecat, you ever watch the Three Stooges? In one episode they were building their dream house for them and their new brides. You have to watch it. When completed they marched the wives in blindfolded then .... SURPRISE.. doors going sideways , stairs leading to nowhere ... You get picture. Double hungs are made to go up and down for both aesthetic and functionality. The windows are usually spring loaded for ease of operation relying on gravity to do most of the work, a side ways installation defeats that purpose. generally double Hung's are much taller than their width and that lends to the beauty of a double hung with a 6 over 6 pattern which are lovely. I say noway. You want side to side operation keep hitting those garage sales till you come across some bypass windows. These are specifically made for your desired function. So I think we now have Moe .Curly,. Larry, and Firecat. good Luck

I'd go with casement they look nicer but I believe they are more expensive. If you can't afford it go with double hung, sliders, I think, just look cheap. Also with double hung you can lower the bottom and the top parts to get a nice breeze in the summer.

No. They will look tacky with an extra frame around them, and never work properly. You should sell them at a profit at your own yard sale, and for a patio visit major hardware store for the most basic slider windows available. i.e.: shed/garage windows. They may be just a thin plastic frame, but will work for your purposes, and may even include screens.

They probably have springs in the sides that may give you some trouble, and they won't shed water correctly. . Also the track that ends up one the bottom may wear out prematurely. You will also have the sill hanging out on one side. Otherwise they may work fine
