I heard on tv a few years ago that there are places you can go to get a total body scan. I sometimes feel like my heart is racing and my fingers get numb and my insurance will not approve all kinds of test so would it be wise to pay privately for a total body scan. I live in southern Calif. Where would I go? and do you know an approximate cost?

I had one done in the hospital but it sounds like you may want to see a neurologist first so they can decide what kinds of tests you may need since the nerves are involved somehow. I would also try to get into a cardiologist or have your primary do an EKG. A full body scan is very very expensive and really does not sound like the test that you need - body scans are done when they are looking for recent injuries, tumors, etc -- something that other tests are not seeming to show. It is like a last resort test.

The fast beating in your heart may or may not be as fast as you think it is. Stop into a pharmacy and check your blood pressure and pulse on one of the machines that these stores have. An EKG - which tests your heart rate would show most abnormalites as a screening tests. The numbness in your fingers could be coming from a pinched nerve, herniation, etc in your back so an MRI of your cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine may help but they are going to want to do x-rays first as a preliminary screening of course.

One may not have to do with the other and just because these are things that are going on at the same time does not mean that they are related in any way. Did you start any new medication recently or were you injured in any way recently - these are some questions to ask yourself. Overall, doctors will order tests that they think you need and your primary doctor will refer you to the appropriate specialists that they think you need who will then order the appropriate tests. Most insurance companies will pay for tests when a doctor orders them for medical necessity so get in to see your primary and go from there.

If your insurance won't cover it. I recommend going to the emergency room at the time of the symptoms. Most likely they will cover the tests they do to diagnose your symptoms:) . I have done that before. It's not a guarantee but I am very sure they will cover it if you went to the ER.

If you are not interested in that and want to procede with a body scan. Try logging on to www.scandirectory.com. I noticed they have listings in CA. Good luck, I hope you feel better soon.
