Before Jesus' crucifixion God's people who died went to a holding place called 'Abraham bosom' This is mentioned by Jesus in Luke 16;22,23. After Jesus' crucifix all believers in Jesus who sleep (a correct term to use rather than die) go straight to heaven. People who sinned will be raised from the dead and judged when the Judgement Day comes (Rev 20:12-15)

It used to be true that some of the people that died, went to a place called "Paradise" in which all those that loved the Lord awaited the Savior. But when Jesus Christ went to the cross & died for our sins...well that is where he was those 3 days ministering to those saints & setting them free...they are in heaven now!
Although there was & is another half of that place...sheol...or hell & that is where all those that do not accept Christ's free gift, & repent & turn from their sins; go....that is a place of torment, which only gets worse at the day of judgement.
Luke 16:22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom:(or also called Paradise) the rich man also died, and was buried; 23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

All people in Purgatory eventually go to Heaven. No one there goes to Hell. It is not a place for a "second Chance".
Read the following to see the Biblical basis for Mortal Sin and Venial Sin. Only those with Venial Sin will go to Purgatory. Mortal Sin goes directly to Hell.
1 John 5:16-17 (New American Standard Bible)

16If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, (A)he shall ask and God will for him give life to those who commit sin not leading to death (B)There is a sin leading to death; (C)I do not say that he should make request for this.
17(D)All unrighteousness is sin, and (E)there is a sin not leading to death.
The Book of Revelation tells us that nothing unclean shall enter Heaven... so if we have a little venial sin...as is suggested by John...we must be purged and purified of it before entering heaven....as is suggested by Revelation.

The apostle Paul says in Thessalonians that we are absent from the body and present with the Lord. He was speaking to Christians, This implies that non-christians are just absent from the body. I would imagine that there is a place for those also as Christians (those of my persuasion) believe in a judgement of non-believers.

People who have died are in "soul sleep" right now, until Jesus comes back then they go to heaven or hell.

God is far wiser than to create the sinner, then punish him; God's judgment is that we (His Beloved) are whole, perfect, and complete, as created. Nothing can change that.
