During a conversation my wife ended up asking me for my sister’s password to her account since she knew I knew the password. I said that it’s not my password to give out.
I work in the IT administrative business and we hold passwords as “gold” so I’m used to never giving out any passwords for anything. I’ve also known my sisters’ password to fix issues (along with other people’s password) since I’m a “fix it” support person to friends/family. She did mention that my sister let her use the password temporarily (which I was there for) to update something, but she did not remember it. My wife ended up saying that she didn’t want it, but just wanted to know that I would give any password it to her and this was a trust issue. I’m I being too retentive on the password issue?

Oh yeah, and in addition, my wife & sister have had issues that seem to linger on. So there is resentment, and she see's it as I am protecting my sister. I still say it's a password and would be the same for any other password I may have.

That's tough, I understand her point of view but I also understand you protecting your sister's privacy. I believe she should understand not to put you in a position of betrayal and that's what she did. Tell her if there were a life and death situation and you had to get onto her computer she would be the only one you would trust to do it but if it's not an emergency you just don't see a reason to give out another's information. I hope that helps you.

I think you are doing the right thing, and it is wrong of your wife to ask. If she wants the password then she should ask her sister for it. Holding someone's password is like a confidentiality agreement, you agree not to give it to others.

Passwords are for privacy.
I fail to see what your wife needed with your sisters password.
you did right not to give it out.
your wife will get over not being able to snoop or whatever she wanted to do.
though if you gave it to her I would imagine it would take longer to build back that trust you would have lost with your sis.
it's your wifes position to ask your sister for the password being she had it once before.
And it is only your sisters decision if she can have it or not.
cheers

No, you were not being unreasonable. It is not your place to give out others passwords-even to your wife. Passwords should be kept secret and only given out by the person to which it belongs.

I have to commend you. You are doing the right thing. Your wife will get pissed , but so it goes. Tell her if she really wants it to ask her sister. I am fairly sure that her sister will not be to pleased and that will be the end of it. I consider you very honorable and respectful of other people.

You did the right thing. Your wife knows that if your sister wanted her private information for something and you gave it out she would be mad at you for not checking with her first. So your wife can't get mad at you for showing your sister the same respect and not giving out her info without her permission.

It was unfair of your wife to ask you to give her your sister's password. I would never ask my husband to give me any passwords he knows, and vice versa.
Sounds to me like she was just looking for an argument.
