We must hit the nail at the right place. The root cause is urban poverty. The cause of urban poverty is the rural unemployment. The rural economy is in doldrums; the farmers do find doing agriculture remunerative any more. A lot of farmer suicides takes in various States. It is symptomatic of the ills that plagues our rural population. A large number of people are migrating to the cities, in search of their livelihood. The cities do not have that many jobs and the infrastructure to sustain the migrant rural population is quite dismal. The migrant population will have to sustain itself, some how. If they do not find job to sustain themselves , they have to survive either by begging or stealing. It is indeed a big problem, for which bigger efforts are required to take care of these hapless work force.

I think India has problems with an unbalanced economy - and much too large a gap between the wealthy and the destitute. Unfortunately, with their politics and economic situation this bad for so long, it's going to take a while to truly bridge that gap. The best we could do now is advocate to offer more jobs to the very poorest and pay them wages so it'll be feasible for them to survive. Thank god the "caste" system is gone. That probably screwed things up worse.

No ur way is not at all feasible. As if u start giving food for free they would become more lethargic and they would stop working at all.To stop beggars in the city we must stop donating them unless they are physically disabled.
We must try to provide a kind of employment to them by replacing all the child labour by the beggars. And instead of offering left over food just for free we can sell it to them at a nominal cost so that they would start earning at least that much by working hard.

Unlike yesteryear bot all the beggars are destitute. People becoming more generous, lazy people find it the easiest way. These people must be recognised and kept off.
The really disabled and poor people must however ne helped by philanthropists and organisations..Neglecting the villages is also the reason for the proliferation of beggars. The must improve the infrastructure in villages and social organisations must adopt villages.

As a society, India fosters the proliferation of beggars. It is considered an honorable and necessary profession, as credible and respected as brain surgery.
You've got an uphill battle ahead of you to attempt to change this ingrained cultural oddity.

I may sound harsh, but why not sterilize all beggars so that atleast they do not produce more to run the family business!
