I am perplexed by some answers I'm reading to questions in the Immigration forum. Why is it that some of you believe only a LEGAL immigrant could ever become a great citizen?
For those of you who don't know my story:
My husband came here LEGALLY to work on a farm cutting vegetables for $3/hr. He spoke no English. He had no high school education. He taught himself enough English to get a better paying job. Doing so made him inelligible to renew his visa because of his choice to leave the work program with which he came here. He became "illegal." Long story short he is now fully bilingual, he owns his own business, has a 6-figure income, we live in one of the nicest historic homes in our town and are well-respected members of our community & he is a citizen - all in 10 years time. I would like to add that he has ALWAYS paid taxes with a REAL SSN given to him by our gov't when he first came here.

With that info would you consider him a good citizen? How would you react upon meeting him/us?

YOU GUYS ARE NOT READING THIS. HE CAME HERE LEGALLY ORIGINALLY AND BECAME ILLEGAL BY TAKING A BETTER JOB AND OVER-STAYING HIS VISA.

SPANX....Thanks but I was asking about my own particular situation. No one has yet answered how they would react upon meeting him/us after hearing our story and knowing he was formerly illegal.

Pamela, you could file your finger all the way down to the bone explaining to these people your point and they still wont get it. Their minds are set and ignorance is extremely difficult to repair from what Ive seen here. Good Luck!!

Great story.
I know there are great stories out there of "illegal immegrants done good".
Super. I know the media perpetuates the stereotype of the "undocumented" by showing the sweet little old guy with the moustache picking strawberries. He's covered in dirt and dumps the strawberries into a rickety old pickup truck. What's wrong with that? NOTHING
*The problem is when a million illegals are ARRESTED every year and border police snags a MILLION POUNDS of dope each year at the border.
Americans have heard enough warm and fuzzy stories about the undocumented done good. I will gladly pay 25 cents a strawberry rather than foot the bill that illegal immegrants run up. They are not the moneymakers the media portrays them as. They cost money. I don't want to pay. That's all.
You seem very nice and I have nothing against you or your husband. I wish you the best of luck in the future.
Listen, I don't care where a person lives, where they are from and how they got here. I would go to dinner and have drinks and probably like you. You seem nice.
It's the government's and our society's fault for letting the problem get as big as it has. Not yours or your husband's.

Legal immigrants come to be residents everyday. Legal immigrants are inexperienced holders. Foreign trade pupils don't seem to be immigrants. They are viewers. No scholar visa holder is an immigrant. They are all viewers. They recognise that they need to pass dwelling whilst their college is completed, and they comply with that earlier than they're ever granted a visa. They can continuously come again on a legitimate immigrant visa later, in the event that they qualify.

A "great American citizen" is one who contributes to the economy, education, and culture of America. The recent influx of immigrants into America may have contributed to the American economy, but their influx has brought chaos to public education.
As a teacher, I am expected to "cowtow" to the Spanish speaking students in my classroom. These students are not required, nor expected, to perform to the standards of English-speaking students.
I am a 65-year old retired substitute teacher in a metropolitan school district. My husband is a retired janitor. We live on Social Security benefits and my substitute-teacher pay. Am I bitter about the benefits "illegal immigrants" receive? You bet I am!
My first job was for $3 a day! My first teaching job was $4,250 a year. Figure up what that is per day, per month. I don't mind people coming to the U.S. for a "better" life; but, I do take issue with those who are working here, taking advantage of our education and social services and sending money back to a country that doesn't care about their own people.

Anyone can become a great citizen, they just have to show it. An illegal immigrant can be just as great, and even better, than an American-born or legal immigrant. They just have to work and have a positive effect on their society. Most American-borns just sit on their butts wolfing down a McDonald's burger.

Every post your husband just gets richer and richer. How can a soc sec card be valid when he became illegal it doesn't go on there is cause and effect. He worked for $ 3.00 an hour that is in direct violation of the medium wage law. It seems he broke a lot of laws to advance and wasn't as honest and well intending as you pro claim him to be.You gloss over him with the big details but fail to include small things like a number of laws he broke and didn't care to follow the law of the land instead he made up his own set of rules and regulations .But I guess you have to do that if you want to be like the folks on hill. If we want to be a hero do we just follow him?

All human beings should be treated with dignity and respect. As for things being illegal, they are only illegitimate because a piece of paper says so, not because everyone voted for it.

I would say that he is a hard worker and it's great that he did well for himself, but he still did it illegally. If he was that driven, he could have found a way to enter the country legally.

When someone breaks the law and enters (or stays in) a country illegally they intentionally cut in front of other immigrants waiting to enter legally. Go back to your home country and apply to come here legally. It is the right thing to do. In the meantime, pay any back taxes you may owe.
