u will know, trust me, i had it and its was the most horrible thing ever, u can do things to reduce ure chances, for example do not smoke. disloding the blood clot , does not mean u will get dry socket, its actually caused by the inflammation of the bone lining. i keep my socket really clean and did not smkoe etc and i got it,
i am a dental nurse and my partner is a dentist, we were stuck on a boat back from sweden for 24 hours, and i was moaning like a baby, i think at one point he was going to push me over board,
if it does start to hurt see the dentist

I have a dry socket right now from getting all 4 wisdom teeth out a week ago. I also have an infection on the other side. So much fun!! I didn't drink through a straw, spit, or smoke. It just happened. I am on the pill which they say greatly increses a woman's chance of getting a dry socket.
Anyways, on the dry socket side I started to feel alot of throbbing pain around the 3rd or 4th day. I also couldn't get the disgusting taste out of my mouth no matter how much I brushed and scraped my tongue. Another sign is every time I yawned it hurt really bad.
After a few days I went back in to the dentist to be on the safe side. I now have the medicated gauze in both sockets in my lower jaw and am on antibiotics. It feels alot better. You just have to keep going back to get the medicated gauze replaced until the dry socket heals.

I smoked when I had wisdom teeth pulled. Rinse the area with lukewarm water mixed with table salt for 30 seconds after you've had a ciggie and you'll be just fine. wow. Look at all these amateurs above me. Tsk. Tsk. I never got dry socket

On average a 'dry socket' will occur within acouple of days of the extraction. YOU WILL KNOW! I havent had one, but i deal with it everyday, from people not following instructions given to them. They always say, the pain is worse than a toothache.
Either way, NO.. your fine eating ice cream. So no worries. We want you eating soft foods/soups right now for the first couple of days.
Things NOT to do is:
Drinking through a straw...
Smoking...
Use of any tobacco products...
Spitting...
ANYTHING, that causes a SUCK'ular motion inside your mouth..DO NOT DO!!
By doing these things.. you'll be taking the chance of pulling that clot out. Which in turn, allows air into your extracted site. If air gets in and drys the site out, it drys the bone out that has been exposed. This is when the pain starts. And nothing you do, will stop that pain... Until you go back to the doctor and the Assistant places a medicated tape or foam into its site (socket).
After a couple of days of soft foods only... your clot has formed into a scabbing process. You'll be fine eating other things. Just be careful not to eat anything that can bust it open like chips! Chips are hard and sharp, and they will cut and reopen that scab. Another thing, food will get in the 'hole'.. but dont freak out and worry. You'll be fine, as long as you brush/floss normally and start rinsing your mouth out to kill the bacteria that hibernates in the mouth. Everything should go smoothly after that...

You should be absolutely fine, but jsut make sure to keep ice on your jaws (it cuts down on the swelling as well as the pain). When you go back to your oral surgeon for a check up, you should receive a syringe with a solution to clean the holes you have in your mouth. By the way, it's really nasty when the stiches fall out, don't be too disturbed by it.

THE PAIN OF HAVING A DRY SOCKET WILL DEFINITELY TELL YOU THAT YOU HAVE ONE. A DRY SOCKET IS BONE WHICH IS EXPOSED IN THE MOUTH WITHOUT A BLOOD CLOT OVER IT. AVOID USING STRAWS OR WANTING TO SUCK THE SOCKET. DON'T SMOKE, AND RINSE WITH WARM SALT WATER ( 1/2 TSP SALT DISSOLVED IN A CUP OF WATER). IT'S IMPORTANT NOT TO EAT PEANUTS, POTATO CHIPS, ETC. THAT CAN GET STUCK INSIDE THE SOCKET.

When I had my wisdom teeth pulled, I knew I had dry socket because my mouth started tasting like metal. The best treatment to prevent it, get a syringe, ( can get from drug storre or Walmart) and mix it full of mouth wash and water. Then flush it out. That will help to keep it free from injection, and less likely to get dry socket. It helped after I had dry socket! Good Luck

You will know if you get one. I had a dry socket once and my dentist told me to rinse my mouth with warm salt water. I don't know what you mean by the clot falling out, I think a dry socket is when the blood and stuff can't drain because the clot or scab or whatever it is prevents the draining. Dry sockets are usually in the lower jaw, On the top jaw the hole can drain because of gravity. It does take a few day to get one.
