Platinum costs a fortune! It is better than gold where allergic reaction is concerned, but you might also try bumping your jewelry's gold content up to 18-23K. If you'll looking for the metal that is the very best for avoiding reaction, you might try stainless steel. It's what most surgical instruments are made of for that very reason, as well as it's durability and ability to be cleaned under high heat. Stainless steel jewelry is becoming much more popular these days and the designs are a lot more updated.

Both are a good choice, but platinum is stronger.
Because gold is bent so easily it is often formed into alloys, mixed with other metals. In the case of White Gold it can be nickel, which a lot of people can have a reaction to. Because of all the alloys made with gold I would stick to platinum or titanium both are very strong metals and are often put into alloys, but the metal themselves don't require alloys. So if you buy a platinum or titanium earring then you will know that it is ONLY platinum. If you buy a yellow gold earring then there could be other metals, even nickel in it, unless you knew it was 24 karats (pure gold). But the earring posts on 24 kart gold are often too weak to last long. They could also be just gold plated. When the plating wears down then your ear will be exposed to the metal inside.
Another good choice is titanium, while researching your question I came across several online retailers selling titanium and glass as hypoallergenic.
According to this website: http://www.serenityjewellery.co.uk/earrings.shtml
Titanium and niobium are the most hypoallergenic metals available.
If the earring is only plated with titanium, niobium, or platinum then that plating will wear less and last longer.
One site: http://reviews.ebay.com/Hypoallergenic-Earrings-or-Jewelry-Findings_W0QQugidZ10000000002091124?ssPageName=BUYGD:CAT:-1:LISTINGS:1
"Until recently I thought that Surgical Stainless steel was hypoallergenic, then I found out that the term 'Surgical' was simply a marketing gimmick."
I also found people making claims that bamboo and medical plastic are hypoallergenic. Since hypoallergenic is not a real medical term anyone can claim to have hypoallergenic products.
According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypoallergenic
“Note that the term lacks a medical definition, and is not found it most standard English dictionaries. As there isn't any official certification that an item must undergo before being touted as hypoallergenic, additional studies should be sought after, before one can assert how much and in which way the tendency to cause allergies is decreased”

RE:
Which metal is more hypoallergenic--platinum or yellow gold?
My ears got stung by some mosquitos this summer and ever since my lobes have become extra sensitive. I have a whole bunch of earrings made of white and 14kt yellow gold. My doctor told me that white gold is no longer an option for me. So, I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to do. ...

White gold rings are about 75% pure gold...the rest is alloyed with metals like nickel, and it needs to be plated with rhodium to maintain its white appearance. Platinum is the more durable of the two metals and platinum rings are usually between 90-95% pure platinum, which gives them a naturally white color and makes them hypoallergenic. The rarer of the two metals is platinum (about 30 times rarer than gold), which also makes it more valuable. The price per ounce value changes daily, but I believe the difference between the two has been around $200 recently (which is less of a difference than usual). Hope some of that helps!

Plain Gold,...
If it says Yellow there is a reason they are trying to convince you.
If it's Platinum Gold then it's not just Gold.
If it's Platinum,.. people have pretended like that is brand new too much to do research but I do not think it is Hypoallergenic.
Added: Do not wear earrings until your ears are better. Repierce if you have to,.. make sure they use REAL Gold.

If your doc told you no gold, then no gold, sorry. I know my mom has that prob with her ears, she uses platinum and has no problems. She uses sterling silver as well. The platinum give her no probs whatsoever, everyonce in a while the silver give her some issues, not often tho. Good luck

Don't use stainless steel. Its made with chromium and a lot of people get really bad reactions to it. A lot of my co-workers had to quit because their skin would break out. Surgical implants are made from titanium. I just bought a 100% pure titanium ring for about 500 US. Its not that common, so you would have to really look around on the web or go to a high end jeweller.
