well thats a two part question, but short answer is that first of all, the german army was built to a superior point, they had the benefit of the years they been planning this, and most important a technique used by many armies and football teams have emulated since, the blietzkrieg . (basically, overwhelming the enemy with speed, surprise and strength) our army called it recently "shock and awe". Also technological superiority greatly contributed.
