you need to go to a notary public - some solicitors are qualified as one. try yell.com or the legal services commission website and they will point you to one in your area.

if will cost a fee, which can vary depending on whom you go to. you will need to bring identification with you, although when you book to make the appointment you'll be informed of this.

as soon as you've signed the Change of Name Document to say you wish to relinquish your current name, you will be known as your new one.

it's as simple as that!

If you are an Indian then visit your solictor and submit your request to change your name. The solicitor will file an affidavit with the official legal authority in your town. The court will issue an order permiting you to change your name. Once you change your name and indicate to the court, you need to issue a public notice informing one and all about the change of your name. The same procedure has to be followed with the school certificate and marksheet isssuing authority.

Go to a Notary Public and get it done by Deed Poll. It will have to be advertised in the papers for about (I think) three weeks. then it is legal....this is in the UK ....I have no idea where you are. Having more than one name presents a lot of difficulties even after you have died because you need the Change of Name Certificate for Probate purposes later on.

I changed mine in feb 2005. It cost £49 in total with v.a.t. I did it at my solicitors. It was done there and then, after splitting from my husband it was the best £50 I have ever spent! Having read the other answers, I think it depends where you live. I live in England and here there is no need to go to court or put a notice in the papers.

In the UK you don't need to change your name by deed poll, you can do it by Statutory Declaration - have a solicitor draw up the document for you, then get it certified by a different solicitor, it's £5 to get it certified plus whatever your original solicitor charges you.

However, unless you want to completely change your name, I suggest you ask the school to change it to the correct one for you.
