I picked this tick off my dog yesterday and I'm wondering if anyone knows what kind of tick it is. It is obviously a highly engorged tick and is about 1 cm long.

Here are some close up photos (I used my cell phone camera so the resolution is not great.) I took one of the top and two of the bottom.

Should I be worried?
Thank you

It's just a normal, regualar dog tick. No worries. Ticks get really huge after feasting on blood for hours. No, there is no reason to be alarmed, just use some flea and tick spray on your dog. Put a flea and tick collar on your dog's neck to help reduce fleas and ticks and he should be alright.

Yes, you should be worried. Ticks carry many diseases; Lyme, Babesia, Bartanella, Ehrlichia, I can go on. Some ticks can carry more than one disease at a time too. Have the tick tested to see if it has any diseases. If it does, you dog would probably need about a month of antibiotics.

They don't know enough about these things to exclude that one. Keep an eye on your dog (cute by the way) for fatigue, lethargy, pain, confusion, very similar to having the flu symptoms.

I found a link that looks like your tick but it's not working. Go to Yahoo search and type "picture of a wood tick" The second picture looks like your tick. And don't believe the hype that these diseases don't exist where you live.

It is a female dog tick, that has feasted on the blood of your dog, which they must do just prior to laying their eggs. Kill the tick or there will be many babies. Look and make sure there are no other ticks on her. Nice dog.

Appears to be a common wood or grass tick, generally picked up in tall grass or off of trees, pines, they seek any warm body to latch- rather drop-on to. Gross looking! Now I've got the creeps!!

I'm afraid it's a cicada - your dog's hair is too long, maybe trim it before he develops a bush fire...
