Good question!
1. Do its followers have credibility? Do they do good things? Are they sincere? Do they have doubts while they seek the truth (are they mature?) Are they open to discussing these things? Are there mature and educated people among their ranks? Are there long-standing members?
2. Does it have historical veracity? Do its tenets contradict themselves? Can any aspect (people, places, events) be verified? Can any aspect be solidly disproven? Does it have a history? Is all of the facts and history freely available to all members?
3. Is it relevant today? Does it matter to the modern man as it did 100 or 1000 years ago?
4. Does it have a touch of the divine? Is there something about it which transcends what we know and understand? Can this divinity be proven or at least, NOT disproven?
5. Does it impose on your life in a positive way? Are you free to leave at any time? Have you sacrificed anything that has not come back to you in some form?
6. How does it make you feel? Are these mature feelings?
7. Do you think or feel that you are closer to the divine? Does this religion offer some insight (to go with their tenets) as to what you're thinking and feelings are realistic?
8. Are you a better person for it? Can you understand why or why not?
9. Are you proud to tell others about it?

You can judge a tree by its fruit.Theese are the words of Jesus .Great religions produce great people.Great religions also influence people of other religion;like Mahatma Gandhi.I am christian but I have a high opinion of the buddhist religion, the people I came across from that religion are peaceful, trustworthy and well educated.I also respect some other religions like hinduism.

techeroflogic,
If you are meant to discover the truth, then even the desire of knowing it will come from God. You simply have to trust Him for it. He will lead you.
After all, you are trying to find Him. The idea has crossed your mind and reached into your heart, right? You want to be sure? Then trust God. Nobody else can do that part for you.
If you want to know more, I am willing to help. I am a Protestant Christian.
EDIT: You are holding on to the wisdom of the world. I'm not speaking against logic. But God's wisdom surpasses that, man. If you want to be spiritual, then you have to look at the things of the spirit. But if you are just looking for a religion, pick one. It ain't going to matter.

FAITH...
what do you TRULY feel, & believe is true? A lot of people just choose a religion because it gives them worldly happiness, makes them popular, allows them to sin and think it's ok when they know it's not. When you truly find God, He speaks to you. Maybe not like someone would talk to you over the phone, but spirtually. You feel an amazing sense of comfort & completion. You have someone to turn to any time, & you KNOW that Jesus is the truth.

Do your Research. Test the validity of what they preach.
This is what i believe. Test it.
What I believe.
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
the Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord:
Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He arose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty,
whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy *catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.

Bug the church and monitor it remotely , counting the 'hallelujahs'.
Hallelujahs in churches are the holy-type equivalent of 'standing ovations' in political speeches.
Both merely measure blind faith, which is just as valid a way to judge Truth - in either field. Except when it's too late.

by thier deeds will you know them
if they talk of god and say jesus is god they are wrong
if they talk of jesus who leads man to god they are right
if they put creed before god they are wrong
if they put ritual before god they are wrong
if they devide or deride other belief systems in the one god they are wrong
if your mother and father believes the belief they are right.
religion is that that unites
that that devides is wrong
god lies within all
belief must unite the whole or it divides the wholy
judge not
by thier /our deeds alone
as long as you love god and love neighbour your not far off the truth. ....never tell your parents they are wrong
if nothing else love god they also are children of god
however wrong or right you may feel them to be love them allways they made you and have every right to take you out of the play

It should line up with the Word of God, His character and principles. Don't fall for a religion that is full of man-made rules, requirements and restrictions. You aren't here to please man but to please God. Make sure the religion is based on the sacrifice of Jesus and creator God. Know the Bible for yourself and you will be able to spot a fake religion.

study all aspects of that religion, and then your heart will tell you if it is rite.
For example if you are studying Islam then don't listen to the media and all the war against it, but read the translation of quran and read its tafsir which makes you understand the meaning of it then make your own opinion.
Peace be up on you
