If, when you open the package, there is a white film on the chocolate, don't be scared - that's cocoa butter that's risen to the top. If you take a bite out of it and it tastes rancid, throw them away. Chocolate itself doesn't really go bad, but the fats in the milk in the milk chocolate can go rancid, along with the oils in the peanut butter in the middle.

Open one of those Reese's peanut butter cup and using a
small spoon, scoop up a small portion of it and taste it in the
mouth.
If you find it funny or sourish taste, then it's expired and throw
out the whole lot!

When it's hard as a rock and tastes like mold. I left one on my dresser for a couple years as a kid, and decided to eat it when i found it (chocolate doesn't go bad, right? not when you're seven). It was rather gross, I remember puking alot afterwards.

The chocolate will literally have white splotches on them! It's not mold,,,it doesn't even have a texture. Trust me, you will be able to tell. They chocolate looks dried up in places,,,almost like what white chocolate would look like,,,but it's hard and taste old.
