Assuming there are levels of souls, is it acceptable to assume we have an awareness of our next life before we ultimately get to choose it, as if to pick the life that will be best suited for us to reach our goals in order to make way for progression?

i believe we do choose our parents and the best time to reincarnate in each lifetime to help set our souls upon the path that will be best for us to accomplish the lessons in our continued growth.
choice is the only true power we have over ourselves and therefore our progression in any lifetime.

Not sure what religion you are practicing, but as a Catholic, there is no levels of souls. God put a soul into each conceived baby at the moment of conception. When that body dies, that soul goes to Heaven or hell forever. It doesn't come to earth in a different person or animals nor as a changed soul.

Yes it sounds like you have the basic idea.Hell is supposed to have 9 levels and heaven has the same number of energy levels. So depending on your souls power level that is as high in heaven as you can go at the time.without feeling any ill effects from trying to pull your self up higher. the higher power level will make you feel like you've gone to hell.
When and if we decide to reincarnate we will have a talk with our Guardian Angel and review our Past life actions to see what we need to work on. to be able to advance to a higher soul power level in Heaven after the Physical body we chose dies again.and our soul is released back to heaven.
